Baseball/Softball round-up: Eaton beats Keller 1-0, Northwest gets walk off in extras

Eaton 1, Keller 0

Tyler Michalek and Nathan Nunez combined for a two-hit shutout and the Eagles handed the Indians their first district loss of the season.

Eaton and Keller are 4-1 in 4-6A.

Both Eaton pitchers combined for nine walks, but managed to get out of multiple threats. Michalek threw four innings and struck out four. Nunez threw three innings and four strikeouts.

Keller, the No. 1 area team in the Class 6A rankings, left nine runners on base.

Keever Vincent pitched well for Keller, going 5 2/3 innings with four hits, one unearned run and nine strikeouts.

Laithe Shelley and Elijah George opened the bottom of the fifth for Eaton with back-to-back singles. Nolan Bushko grounded into a fielder’s choice with one out and Shelley scored the only run off a Keller error.

Boswell 6, Chisholm Trail 0

Boswell scored four runs in the third inning to defeat the Rangers and stay unbeaten in 3-6A.

Colton Cauthen pitched six innings and allowed one hit. Berkeley Roddy struck out two batters in the seventh.

Chase Plowman went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Cauthen and Wyatt Fielding both went 2 for 4.

SL Carroll 10, Keller Central 0

The Dragons scored four runs in the third and five in the fourth to beat the Chargers in a run-rule victory.

Owen Proksch pitched a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. He also homered, went 3 for 3 and drove in four runs.

Max Reyes went 2 for 2 with three RBI.

Cole Bedwell went 1 for 2 with two RBI.

Burleson 5, Legacy 4

The Elks went down 4-3 after the Broncos scored two in the top of the seventh before Burleson came back in the bottom half of the inning.

Drew Santos and Cayden Cartmill hit back-to-back one-out singles and a Jess Ackerman hit loaded the bases.

With two outs, Drue Saenz took a 3-1 pitch for ball four and the game-winning RBI walk.

Given King hit a two-run double to put Legacy up 4-3.

Kyndall Cassidy struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings for Burleson. Ben Woods led the Elks with two RBI.

Birdville 10, Grapevine 2

Seven runs in the sixth inning pushed the Hawks past the Mustangs. Birdville, No. 1 in the 5A area rankings, remained perfect in 6-5A.

OU commit Parker Hutyra allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts in a complete-game. Hutyra struck out a school-record 20 batters in a game last week.

Birdville took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Alex Showalter RBI double. Grapevine took a 2-1 lead in the third.

A Mason Siegmund RBI double tied it for the Hawks in the fourth.

Hogan Shelby hit a bases-loaded single to score one in the sixth and Bynum Martinez opened the flood gates with a grand slam to center field on a 1-0 pitch.

Aledo 13, Granbury 3

After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats scored in the final four innings to beat the Pirates by run-rule.

Granbury was held to two hits and a three-run home run from Tyler Guidry in the second that cut the lead to 5-3.

Ethan Jaques, a baseball player of the week this season, struck out three batters in five innings.

Aledo led 5-0 after the top of the second inning fueled by a two-run homer from Hunter Rudel and solo shot by Andrew Cambre. Caden Pulido added a two-run double. Cambre added an inside the park homer in the third that scored three more runs.

A Estevan Flores’ RBI double helped Aledo extend the lead to 11-3 in the fourth. Ethan Nawrocki’s RBI double made it 12-3 in the fifth. Texas commit Max Belyeu singled in a run to center to push it to 13-3.

Softball

Timber Creek 10, Eaton 1

Kyndel McDaniel, Saniya Hill and Isabella Bojkovic all homered as the Falcons defeated the Eagles in 4-6A.

Timber Creek won its third straight game.

Falcons’ starter Nicole Stuhr gave up a first-inning home run before shutting down the Eagles, allowing three hits and striking out 14. She set a school-record with 17 strikeouts in a game last week.

McDaniel hit a three-run homer to give Timber Creek a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Cameron Stuhr and Megan Allen drove in runs on back-to-back singles in the fifth.

Hill and Bojkovic hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth.

Joshua 6, Midlothian 4

Catie Amador pitched six-scoreless innings and posted 15 strikeouts as the Owls beat the Panthers in 14-5A.

The Panthers were kept scoreless until scoring four runs in the top half of the seventh.

Rylie Rumfield went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Maddie Warren went 2 for 2 with an RBI and Zaidyn Streeter also drove in a run.

Brewer 6, WF Rider 0

Blair Shipman threw a three-hit shutout and struck out five, and Kaymie Chandler hit two homers as the Bears got the win in 5-5A.

Hannah Caldwell also homered, doubled and scored two runs. Kelsey Valo went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored. Mia Serrato also drove in a run for Brewer.

The Bears scored three runs in the sixth.

Weatherford 8, Haltom 0

Kaylee Embrey went 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored as the Kangaroos beat the Buffalos in 3-6A.

Lauren Belles threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 11.

The Roos scored six runs through the first two innings.

Hanna Bartels hit a two-run single and Kayleigh Cassels went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Landry Fonseca went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Northwest 2, Richland 1

Abi Young struck out 13 and Alexah Reyes hit the walk-off inside the park homer as the Texans edged out the Royals in nine innings.

Richland pitcher Jacey Lees struck out nine in a complete game effort. The Royals scored in the third on an RBI single by Landri McKittrick.

The two pitchers combined for 283 pitches with 208 for strikes.

Sydney Zenon tied the game with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh.

Kennedale 2, Midlothian Heritage 1

The Wildcats scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to pick up a big win in district play.

Kennedale led 1-0 with a run in the first.

Heritage tied it with a run in the sixth.

Argyle 1, Decatur 0

The Argyle Eagles improved to 5-0 in district after beating the Decatur Eagles in a key showdown.

It was a pitcher’s duel with both teams combining for five hits.

Argyle’s Ava Edwards threw a complete game while striking out eight. The only run came on a Maya Bland home run.
