Playoff soccer recap (3/29): Trimble Tech, Heights, DHJ boys all win area round games

Boys

Diamond Hill-Jarvis 3, Argyle 2 (4-2 PK)

In a rematch of last season’s area round, which also went to a shootout, DHJ continued its season with a win over Argyle in the Class 4A Region 1 area round on Tuesday at Pennington Field.

DHJ (18-4-1), last season’s 4A state runner-up, will play Midlothian Heritage in the regional quarterfinals.

Heritage beat Gainesville 3-1.

Diamond Hill and Argyle played neck-to-neck in a physical first half. DHJ finally got an opportunity when it was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick by Ricardo Gonzalez.

Gonzalez nailed the attempt for a DHJ 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

Five minutes later, Argyle scored the equalizer.

Both teams had their shots in the second half until DHJ regained a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute. Gonzalez raced past two Argyle defenders and finished it off past the Argyle goalie that was coming up in the box.

DHJ did a good job killing the clock and playing keep away. Goalkeeper Cesar Ortiz made a couple of nice stops to keep Argyle at bay. But the DHJ defense collapsed late and Argyle tied it at 2-2 with 1:13 left in regulation.

After a scoreless overtime period, the game went into PKs for the second straight season.

DHJ made all four of its attempts and Argyle sailed its first and fourth kick high above the top post.

Arlington Heights 3, WF Rider 2 (5-4 PK)

After finishing fourth place in District 7-5A, the Yellowjackets are headed to the third round of the Class 5A playoffs after knocking off Rider in penalty kicks in a Region 1 area round showdown.

The game was tied at 2-2 after the overtime period.

Heights will face District 7-5A champ and district rival Trimble Tech in the regional quarterfinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. from historic Farrington Field.

LD Bell 1, EP Socorro 0

After making history in the bi-district round, the Bell Blue Raiders continued their magical season with a win over El Paso Socorro in a Class 6A Region 1 area round game on Tuesday in San Angelo.

Bell’s win over Carroll in the bi district round was the program’s first playoff win since 2000.

It’s unclear the last time Bell won an area championship.

Maddox Olatunde was tripped up after cutting back inside of a defender following a throw-in and captain Nathaniel Neang finished low after sending the keeper the wrong way to give Bell a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute.

Goalie Aiden Hollander finished with eight saves. He had 17 vs. Carroll.

Bell will return to DFW to play District 4-6A champ Keller in the regional quarterfinals.

Keller beat Odessa 1-0 on Tuesday.

Trimble Tech 3, Colleyville Heritage 2

Trimble Tech scored two first-half goals then held off Colleyville Heritage in a Class 5A Region 1 area round game on Tuesday at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.

The Bulldogs were gifted a goal early when an Edgar Munoz roller went right through the arms of Panther goalkeeper Bryce Cottle to give Trimble Tech (26-3-1) a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.

Cottle and Tech net minder Aaron Ceja were both busy fighting off shots until late in the first half. Munoz had a shot deflect off Cottle and Julian Hernandez punched in the rebound to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 39th minute.

“Honestly, when you talk to people everyone says that we’re the underdog and we’re just not,” said Trimble Tech coach James Williams. “We are one of the best teams in the state.”

Colleyville Heritage star Rami Helou broke free and took a nice centering pass before slipping it past Ceja to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 57th minute.

Daniel Jimenez looked to have put the game away for the Bulldogs in the 74th minute with a 35-yard blast past Logan Graves, who took over in goal for the Panthers in the second half, that upped the lead to 3-1. But a penalty in the box on Trimble Tech three minutes later led to a PK goal by Helou.

Tech was able to run out the final three minutes to hold on.

The game was extremely well played and physical with both teams creating numerous chances despite a 25-30 mile per hour cross wind.

Colleyville Heritage’s season ends at 20-3-2.

“It was a great game and could have gone either way,” said Williams. “It was close and I have to give credit to Colleyville, but we have a great group of boys...a magical group.”

Grapevine 2, Wyatt 1

Tanner Anstis finished off a Leo Londe assist and the Mustangs edged out the Chaparrals in a Class 5A Region 1 area round game in Arlington.

Londe also scored for his 20th goal of the season.

Jonathan De La Torre scored the lone goal for Wyatt.

Euless Trinity 3, EP Pebble Hills 1

The Trojans are headed to the Class 6A Region 1 quarterfinals after taking down Pebble Hills. Trinity will next play El Paso Eastlake in the third round.

Mansfield Lake Ridge 3, Tyler Legacy 2

Chase Turcotte, Donovan Hawkins and Micah Baucom all scored goals for the Eagles during their Class 6A Region 2 area round championship win over Legacy.

Turcotte and Cristian Gomez recorded the assists for Lake Ridge.

Lake Ridge will play district rival Mansfield in the regional quarterfinals Friday night at Newsom Stadium.

Mansfield 2, North Mesquite 1 (6-5 PK)

Jaden Wong scored for the Tigers in regulation and Mansfield edged out North Mesquite in an extended shootout in the Class 6A Region 2 area round.

Girls

Colleyville Heritgae 2, Burleson 0

Sophomore Allie Love, last year’s all-area newcomer of the year, scored two first-half goals and the Panthers’ defense held the Elks scoreless during their Class 5A Region 1 area round matchup on Tuesday at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

Heritage (18-3-2), which knocked out Burleson in this round last season, will play Burleson Centennial in the regional quarterfinals.

With wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour all evening, the Panthers took advantage playing with the wind in the first half and got off multiple good looks. Burleson goalkeeper Peyton Roberts kept a clean sheet going early with several impressive saves, but the Heritage attack finally pushed through in the 26th minute.

Love was fouled in the box and beat Roberts to the right side for the score and her 34th goal of the season. To her credit, Roberts did go right, but was just late to the ball.

Love got off a nice shot in the 33rd minute that was just high, but did get another chance at her 35th goal when she finished off an Olivia Belcher pass in the box in the 36th minute that gave Heritage a 2-nil lead. It was also Love’s 62nd goal of her young career.

Burleson (15-8-1), which went fourth in District 8-5A and beat 7-5A champ Fort Worth Trimble Tech in overtime, had its turn playing with the wind, but the Heritage back line gave the Elks fits all night.

The Elks attempted one shot on goal.

Burleson Centennial 2, WF Rider 1

The Spartans hung on to beat the Raiders in the Class 5A Region 1 area round. Centennial got goals from Kristine Garcia and Journey Curs.

Curs assisted on Garcia’s goal and Olivia Quintanilla assisted on Curs’ goal. Olivia Yeoman played well in the net for Centennial.

Joshua 2, Hallsville 1

With goals coming from Graycen Rasmussen and Bella Cook, the Owls, champions out of District 14-5A, edged out Hallsville in a Class 5A Region 2 area round showdown in Kaufman.

Joshua is headed to the regional quarterfinals where it takes on state powerhouse Highland Park on Friday at Kennedale.

The Owls were able to break a scoreless tie in the 23rd minute when Karen Miranda slid a through ball to the top of the box and Rasmussen was able to squeeze one past the post for her UIL area leading 45th goal of the season.

Leading 1-0 at intermission, the Owls extended their lead to 2-nil on Cook’s goal in the 49th minute. Cook finished off a Maddy Bourzikas cross deep in the box.

Hallsville’s only goal came in the 69th minute.

Benbrook 2, Ranchview 1 (Monday)

Reece Moorman found an opening in the box to finish off a Whitney Thomas corner to give the Bobcats the lead for good and Benbrook rallied past the Wolves in a Class 4A Region 1 area round game at Kennedale.

Benbrook (21-1-1) sets up a regional quarterfinal rematch with defending 4A champ Midlothian Heritage at 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson Stadium in Mansfield.

After a scoreless first half, Benbrook found itself in rare trouble when Ranchview took a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute on a Lexus Mosely attempt that bounced off the Benbrook goalie before Chasity Rivera finished it off.

It was just the sixth goal given up by Benbrook this season and first since March 1, and second since mid January. The Bobcats only surrendered one goal in district play.

It didn’t take long for Benbrook to score the equalizer when Thomas was fouled in the box and scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Four minutes after that, she was set up with the go-ahead corner.

It was a perfectly placed ball from Thomas and finished off by a Moorman header in the 54th minute.

Midlothian Heritage 6, Burkburnett 0

Rose Giambruno and Sydney Dickson scored two goals apiece and the Jaguars won their Class 4A Region 1 area round game.

Maddie Berumen and Jules Burrows also scored.

Tanner Sorenson and Maddie Miller combined for the shutout.

Keller 7, EP Franklin 0

Franklin was no match for the overpowering Keller Indians, who won the Class 6A Region 1 area round championship in Midland.

Holly Storer finished off a Kat Burnell pass for a 1-0 lead. Then it was 2-0 on Molly Blank’s assist to Sloane Sullivan. The goals kept coming when Burnell and Storer hooked up for a second time.

Storer returned the favor on the Burnell goal and Keller led 4-0 early in the second half. Sullivan’s header capped off a Baylie Simon corner that put Keller up 5-0.

Eaton 4, San Angelo Central 0

The Eagles shutdown the Bobcats in their Class 6A Region 1 area round game on Tuesday. The Eagles advance to the regional quarterfinals for the second straight season.

Eaton (11-6-5) will take on district foe Keller (16-1-5) at 7 p.m. Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium.

Eaton grabbed a 1-0 lead at halftime on Kieley Aranda’s goal in the opening half, which was set up with the assist from Madison Blue. Aranda also added an assist in the second half.

Alexis Miller, Hannah Oberbeck and Kassandra Ruelas also scored for the Eagles.

Southlake Carroll 3, Wolfforth Frenship 1

In their first playoff matchup since the 2019 regional tournament, freshman Kennedy Fuller got a hat trick to help fuel the Dragons to the Class 6A Region 1 area championship in Wolfforth.

Fuller got her first goal on a header in the 22nd minute.

Frenship tied it at 1-1 before Fuller’s second gave Carroll a 2-1 lead at half.

Fuller picked up her second goal via header and third overall with 39 minutes left in the game.

Carroll (17-1-4) will play Odessa Permian in the regional quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Friday at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Permian edged out Carroll’s district mate, Keller Timber Creek 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday.

Odessa Permian 2, Keller Timber Creek 1 OT

Permian scored late in overtime to eliminate Timber Creek in a Class 6A Region 1 area round game. Timber Creek won a play in game to clinch fourth in District 4-6A before winning the bi-district championship over 3-6A No. 1 Bell for the program’s first playoff win since 2018.

Flower Mound Marcus 5, Arlington 1

After leading 1-0 at intermission, Marcus scored four goals in the second half to knock off the Colts in the Class 6A Region 1 area round in Grapevine.

Arlington avoided the shutout in the 73rd minute on a goal from Lia Castaneda and assist by Summer Brown.

Grapevine 5, Mansfield Timberview 1

Baylor commit Theresa McCullough, fresh off a hat trick in the first round, scored four times against the Wolves in their Class 5A Region 1 area round game in Arlington.

Kasten Merrill scored the other goal.

Sammie Lumpkin, Sammy Larsen and Lucy Dellosso had Grapevine assists while Ashley Knight and Addy Williams posted the win in the net.

Grapevine clinches a spot in the regional quarterfinals for the seventh straight season.

Argyle 19, Kennedale 1

Emma Sheehan scored five goals and assisted on two more, all before halftime as the Eagles rolled past the Wildcats in a Class 4A Region 1 area round game at Pennington Field.

Argyle (21-1-1) will play Alvarado (14-8-1) in the regional quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Birdville.

Eleven other players for Argyle scored.
