Mansfield Timberview basketball coach retires after leading Wolves to 4 state appearances
Mansfield Timberview head basketball coach Duane Gregory announced his retirement on Monday after 18 years with the Wolves.
Gregory has been with the Wolves since they started the basketball program.
He was the head coach for the past 13 seasons.
The Wolves finished as state runner-up in March after reaching the 5A final. Timberview beat Boerne Champion 55-43 in the state semifinals and lost to Beaumont United 62-57 in the title game.
“I’m not tired of it, I’m just tired,” Gregory said in a Twitter post. “Physically, mentally, emotionally...we pour a lot into it. All of us do.
“18 years at Timberview. I have been here since the doors first opened. 13 years as head coach of the Wolves. A piece of my heart and my spirit will always be on that court and in that gym.”
Gregory took Timberview to the playoffs 10 of his 13 years as head coach, including the past eight seasons.
During his last year as an assistant coach, the Wolves reached the state tournament in 2009. Gregory then made Timberview into a state regular and one of the best programs in Texas.
The Wolves reached state four times in the past six seasons while winning titles in 2017 and 2019. The program also went to state this season and in 2020, but never played a game after COVID canceled the tournament.
Timberview was set to play San Antonio Wagner in the semifinals the same day the UIL suspended the tournament, which was ultimately canceled. However, the UIL awarded every team that year as co-champs.
Gregory won over 250 games as head coach with Timberview and posted a 30-3 playoff mark since 2017. During that stretch, the program averaged 30 wins per season.
Timberview won 30 games three times since 2017, including a 36-5 record this season. Timberview went 38-2 in 2019 and won 29 games in 2020 before the COVID cancellation.
“Thank you to all who I have worked with and worked for,” Gregory said on Twitter. “Thank you to all who I had deep relationships with and those who I merely came into contact with. It took all of you to make this possible.
“But mostly thank you to all my former players and coaches. I always tell people my stat line at Timberview is terrible. In 18 years, I haven’t made one shot, I haven’t grabbed one rebound. I haven’t taken one charge. My players have done all of that and my assistant coaches have put them in positions to do so. I have merely been lucky enough to be sitting in the first chair.”
