Dallas Kimball player arrested after shooting student trainer ahead of state semifinal
A Dallas Kimball basketball player has been arrested after a gun he had in his bag discharged and struck a classmate on a team bus.
Kimball players and coaches were on a bus after a practice in San Antonio Wednesday night when the shooting occurred.
The victim, a female team trainer, was struck by a bullet in her left ankle.
She was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio and has since returned home to Dallas.
Senior Kyron Henderson was arrested on two felony gun charges, according to the Dallas Morning News. The two-sport athlete committed to West Texas A&M to play football and basketball in February. Henderson, 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds, was a star receiver for Kimball’s football team.
Kimball (30-8) is scheduled to play Beaumont United (34-3) in a Class 5A semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome.
Dallas ISD superintendent Michael Hinojosa said during a Thursday morning press conference that the University Interscholastic League is allowing Kimball to play, in part because Henderson was immediately removed from the team.
“San Antonio [police] got some resolution for these kids who had nothing to do with it,” Hinojosa said.
