Mansfield Timberview boys advance to regional final, area TAPPS teams fall at state

Boys

Mansfield Timberview 83, El Paso Chapin 56

Four players scored in double figures for Timberview, led by 19 from both Donovan O’Day and Jared Washington and the Wolves won a Class 5A Region 1 semifinal game on Friday in Wichita Falls.

Timberview will face Amarillo in the regional final for a state tournament berth. Amarillo knocked off Timberview’s neighboring school, Mansfield Summit 72-65 in the first semifinal Friday.

Chapin never led as Timberview scored two seconds in and raced out to a 19-9 first-quarter lead. The Wolves went 5 of 11 from the field and 8 of 8 from the line in the opening period while Chapin was held to 3 of 12 and 1 of 4, respectively.

Timberview really put the game out of reach with a 21-point third quarter effort against Chapin’s six. Chapin missed 16 shots, including all seven attempts in the period.

Timberview is in the regional final for the third time in four years and fourth in six.

Washington and O’Day combined to shoot 13 of 21 from the field and 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. Chendall Weaver added 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Samir Dhalle chipped in 12 points.

The Wolves out rebounded Chapin 43-31 and out scored Chapin 38-24 in the paint.

Houston Grace Christian 89, FW Covenant Classical 35

The Cavaliers magical season came to an end during the TAPPS 2A state championship game on Friday at West. Covenant finishes with a 21-12 record.

The Cavs entered Friday’s state title game after beating Lubbock Kingdom Prep 50-37 in Thursday’s state semifinal.

Girls

Dallas Christian 70, FW Southwest Christian 30

The Eagles’ season and quest for a three-peat ended in a TAPPS 5A state semifinal game on Friday at Robinson High School.

Southwest Christian ends its season with a 19-9 record.

Dallas Christian (18-13) advances to the state championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at West.

Shiner St. Paul 31, Fort Worth Bethesda 26

Upset-minded Bethesda Christian gave No. 1 St. Paul everything on Friday, but ultimately fell short in the TAPPS 2A state championship game at West.

Bethesda made program history with its first trip to the state tournament.

Bethesda ends the year 23-9. It beat Weatherford Christian 47-35 in Thursday’s state semifinal.
