Mansfield Summit 53, Richland 48
Richard Lemboye made two key three-point plays in the final period as the Summit Jaguars held off a fourth-quarter rally against the Royals during a Class 5A Region 1 quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Wilkerson Greines Center in Fort Worth.
Summit won its 30th game of the season (30-5) and clinches a spot in the regional tournament for the second straight season. The Jags will play Amarillo on Friday at the Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls. Summit was knocked out in the regional final last season against Amarillo.
A basket from Lemboye put Summit up 38-24 with two minutes left in the third quarter and the Jags led 39-29 after the quarter. But Richland (27-7) got five quick points including a three from SMU football signee CJ Nelson early in the fourth. The Royals cut it to three after a pair of free throws from Mark Rucha with 5:17 left to play.
Lemboye’s first three-point play pushed the lead back to six with under four minutes to go. Nick Shogbonyo drove to the basket for a layup that made it a eight-point lead for Summit with two minutes left.
Richland hit back-to-back threes, the second from Jalen Nettles to cut the Summit lead to 48-46 with 45 seconds on the clock. Lemboye’s second three-point play made it five with 28 ticks left.
Lemboye scored 18 points while Shogbonyo added 11. David Terrell was active early in the first quarter and finished with 10 for Summit. Richland, which made its deepest run since 2004, got 15 from Jourdyn Grandberry. Nettles and Rucha each chipped in 10 points for the Royals.
Mansfield Timberview 62, Mansfield Legacy 60 OT
For the second time this season, Timberview trailed by double digits against Legacy, but rallied to defeat the Broncos. Timberview went 7 of 8 from the line in the extra frame to hold off Legacy in a 5A Region 1 quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Lake Ridge. The Wolves join Summit in Wichita Falls where they will play a regional semifinal against El Paso Chapin on Friday.
It’s the Wolves’ sixth trip to the regional tournament in the past seven seasons.
The Wolves (33-4) trailed 18-6 after the first quarter and 37-27 at intermission. But Timberview trimmed the lead to 48-45 after the third and held Legacy to seven points in the fourth to force overtime.
Timberview’s Donovan O’Day (27 points) and Chendall Weaver (23) combined for 50 points. O’Day hit four three-pointers and scored 14 in the third quarter.
All 27 of his points came after the opening period. Weaver made 9 of 12 at the line.
Legacy (26-9) was led by Amir McMillan’s 20 points. Isaiah Manning added 16 for the Broncos.
El Paso Americas 44, Keller Central 38
Central nearly erased a 27-12 halftime deficit, but ultimately the Chargers were eliminated by Americas in a 6A Region 1 quarterfinal on Tuesday in Andrews.
Central ends the season with a 20-16 record and the program’s first trip to the third round of the playoffs.
Americas (35-2) will play Arlington Martin in the 6A regional semifinals on Friday in Fort Worth.
The Chargers defense stepped up after holding Americas to just five third-quarter points and pulled within 33-30, but the lead grew back to eight with under a minute left in the game.
Mason Jones and Nehemiah Weber both scored 16 points to lead the Central scoring.
North Crowley 53, Odessa Permian 43
The Panthers return to the regional tournament for the first time since 2018 after knocking off Permian on Tuesday in a 6A Region 1 quarterfinal in Abilene.
North Crowley (30-6) will play in a regional semifinal on Friday against McKinney, which upset the nation’s No. 1 team in Richardson on Tuesday.
Both teams participated in the Whataburger Tournament in December.
Permian led 23-22 at halftime before North Crowley got hot in the second half. The Panthers led 38-36 after the third quarter and out scored Permian 31-20 after the break.
KD Davis led North Crowley with 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
Arlington Martin 66, Lake Highlands 62
The Warriors were plus-24 from the three-point line during their win in the 6A Region 1 quarterfinals on Tuesday in Lancaster. Martin (27-7) plays Americas in Fort Worth on Friday in the program’s first regional tournament appearance since 2016.
Lake Highlands trailed 47-43 after the third quarter, but was able to take a 58-54 lead with three minutes left in the fourth before Martin pulled out the victory.
Eight Warriors scored including three in double figures. Cody Stevens led Martin with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Six different players hit a three with three coming off the hands of Ismael Smith-Flores, who had nine points.
Kordelius Jefferson and Denymh Smith added 12 and 11 points for Martin, which made 11 threes.
Argyle 55, Fort Worth Dunbar 51
Argyle, No. 9 in the 4A state rankings, took advantage of a cold shooting first half by No. 24 Dunbar then had to hold off a furious rally by the Wildcats in their 4A Region 1 quarterfinal Tuesday night at Carrollton Turner High School.
Argyle (31-6) moves on the the Region 1 Tournament and will face No. 14 Canyon (28-5) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Friday at Lubbock Christian University.
Dunbar (19-15) started the game going 0 of 8 from the field while the Eagles built an 8-0 advantage. The Wildcats did cut the lead to 8-4 on a tip in by TaJahn Odom with 1:46 left in the first quarter, but Argyle steadily pulled away after that.
The Eagles did a terrific job of protecting the ball and carving up the Dunbar defense in the first two-plus quarters. A lay in by Wayne Pritts with 6:03 left in the third quarter gave Argyle its biggest lead at 36-20, but the Wildcats press started to get hot along with their shooting.
Caylon Jones scored 21 of his game-high 25 points after the break to help Dunbar battle back. The Wildcats trailed by seven, 44-37, at the end of the third quarter. Consecutive baskets by Jones cut Argyle’s lead to 53-48 with 1:22 left in the game.
After a Jeff Kirven three-pointer, Dunbar trailed 53-51 with 59 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats had two opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final 45 seconds, but couldn’t knock down a shot.
A pair of clutch free throws by Eli Valentino, who led Argyle with 17 points, with three seconds left sealed the win.
Argyle out rebounded Dunbar 24-14 with Valentino pulling down eight boards. Jayson Demcher chipped in 14 points for the Eagles while Pritts added 13.
Quick Hits: McKinney upset No. 1 Richardson 54-52 on Tuesday as Alex Anamekwe hit the game-winning put-back layup with two seconds left. It’s McKinney first trip to the regional tourney since 2015 and third since 1996. Brock knocked off Holliday 54-40 to secure a spot at the regional tournament for the 11th time in the past 13 seasons. The Eagles (30-6) will play Shallowater in the 3A Region 1 semifinals on Friday. Peaster’s season ended against Wichita Falls City View 65-36 in the 3A Region 1 quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Greyhounds end the season with a 26-10 record. Lipan beat Italy 47-31 to clinch its seventh straight trip to the regional tourney. Lipan (32-0) will play in the 2A Region 2 semifinals against Sulphur Springs Hopkins.
