Girls Playoff Basketball Recap (2/25): Late basket sends Argyle past Canyon and more

South Grand Prairie 61, Southlake Carroll 40
Carroll junior Camryn Tade scored a game-high 20 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Dragons fell to the Warriors in the Class 6A Region 1 semifinals on Friday night at Wilkerson Greines Center in Fort Worth.
SGP and Braswell play in the regional final on Saturday.
SGP seemed to make everything as the Warriors got out to a quick 10-2 start that forced a Carroll timeout. Tade scored seven in the first quarter, but the Dragons trailed 21-10.
Victoria Dixon gave SGP its largest lead at 25-13 in the second before back to back layups made it 27-13 leading to another timeout. Tade hit a three and Kylie Swanson’s baseline jumper made it an 11-point game.
Carroll (28-6) had trouble defending SGP 6-5 post Adhel Tac, who finished with a team-high 18 points. She had 14 in the first half and the Warriors led 33-19 at the break.
SGP started the third quarter with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach. Tade hit another three and Swanson got a floater to go before Cedraiah Peterson converted a three point play to put SGP up 47-28 at the end of the third period.
Dixon scored 13 for SGP. Swanson and Taryn Barnes scored seven and five points for the Dragons, who made it back to back trips to the regional tournament.
Carroll also won an outright district championship this season for the first time since 2015 and its 28 wins were most since 2014.
Braswell 44, LD Bell 35
The inside presence of Kennedy Evans and Torie Sevier proved to be too much for Bell as the Blue Raiders’ season came to an end during a 6A Region 1 semifinal on Friday at Wilkerson Greines Center in Fort Worth.
Bell senior forward Hallie Rhodes did drop a game-high 20 points in her final high school game.
The Raiders finished 29-9 with their first trip to the regional tournament since 2014. They have won 29 games three times in the past four years.
Braswell and SGP play in the 6A Region 1 final on Saturday. The winner advances to next week’s UIL state tourney in San Antonio.
Jazmyne Jackson nailed a three that gave Braswell a 6-4 lead in the first quarter. Tyra Jackson pulled Bell within 8-6 after a steal and drive to the basket.
Evans, who scored 16 points for the Bengals, had a three point play and Braswell led 13-10 after the quarter.
LSU commit Alisa Williams hit a mid range jumper and Braswell went up 23-13 in the second. Evans hit a three and Sevier made a layup before Bell pulled within 24-17 at intermission.
Sevier scored 12 for Braswell.
Katie Tietjen drained a straight away three to get Bell within five early in the fourth and Rhodes got her 20th point on a floater to convert an inbound pass at 39-33.
But Braswell would score the next six points to pull away.
Jayden Rhodes added eight points for Bell in her final game as well.
Argyle 34, Canyon 32
Caroline Lyles made a three point play with 14 seconds left as the Argyle Eagles stayed perfect on the season in a 4A Region 1 semifinal on Friday in Lubbock.
It was a battle of state powers. Argyle has won six state championships. Canyon won its 20th overall last season.
Argyle goes to 36-0 and plays in the regional final against Decatur on Saturday from Lubbock Christian University.
Lyles finished with 12 points. Gabby Campbell added 11.
Canyon, known for defense, led 6-4 after the first quarter. Argyle out scored Canyon 10-2 in the second and Canyon won the third 14-8. Both teams struggled from deep as Argyle went 0 for 9 on threes. Canyon went 1 of 12. Both teams had just two assists.
Lyles added six rebounds and three blocks for Argyle. Mallory Millington and Samantha Bacon each scored four points.
Taylor Thomas led Canyon with 19 points.
Fort Worth Southwest Christian 64, Grapevine Faith 47
For the third time this season, the Southwest Christian Eagles defeated the Faith Lions, this time in Friday’s regional round at Grace Prep.
The win sends the Eagles (19-8) to the TAPPS 5A state semis for the third consecutive season. They go in as two time defending champs.
Freshman Ananda Jenerson scored 27 points for SCS while Karsen Bryan added 10. Teagan Milliken and Mary Grace King chipped in eight apiece.
The Eagles will play Dallas Christian in the state semis, next Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Robinson High School.
Faith led 14-12 after the first quarter, but SCS out scored the Lions by a whopping 22-2 in the second quarter.
Faith was led by Camryn O’Rear (14 points), MG Delahoz (13) and Sophia Girolamo (9).
Amarillo 73 Mansfield Timberview 50
The Timberview season came to an end at the hands of Amarillo during the 5A Region 1 semifinals on Friday in Wichita Falls.
Amarillo and Lake Dallas play on Saturday in the regional final.
Timberview, which went undefeated in 8-5A, ends at 26-9.
The Sandies, known for their defense, held the Wolves to five first quarter points and led 12-5. They extended the lead to 30-20 at halftime.
Four Sandies scored in double figures led by Lacey Rice and Taytum Bell who both had 13. McKenzie Smith added 11 and Briley Barnes chipped in 10.
Amarillo dropped 28 points in the third and held Timberview to 17.
The Wolves were led by Kamryn Wilson’s 22 points. Chrishawn Coleman added 10. UNT signee Desiree Wooten did not play with an apparent injury.
Amarillo did convert 18 turnovers, but Timberview was held to 33% shooting and 23% from deep. The Wolves only recorded three assists on the night.
Quick Hits: Peaster ended its season with a 49-31 loss to Idalou on Friday. The Greyhounds won 34 games this season. Duncanville and DeSoto play in the regional final on Saturday. Lipan beat out Alvord 51-40 and plays in the regional final on Saturday against Stamford. Kennedale Fellowship was knocked out of the TAPPS 3A regional round against Denton Calvary. Argyle Liberty Christian, Nolan Catholic, Lake Country and Weatherford Christian play a regional game on Saturday. Check back for updated scores.
