Arlington Seguin 57, Fort Worth Wyatt 45

Seguin played exceptional defense to keep Wyatt off balance on offense much of the night as the Cougars, the No. 4 seed out of District 7-5A, stunned 8-5A’s top seed 57-45 in a Class 5A Region 1 bi-district game on Tuesday at Mansfield High School.

Wyatt (19-10) led 8-5 after one quarter, but Seguin (14-16) went on a 9-2 run to close out the first half, fueled by four points each by Mafatime Ndiaye and C.J. Booker, to give the Cougars a 22-15 lead at intermission.

Another 9-2 run by Seguin to end the third quarter gave the Cougars their biggest lead of the night at 44-27. Ndiaye capped the spree with two more baskets and finished with 13 points.

The Chaparrals did battle back to pull within nine, 44-35, on a basket by Nicholas Gunter with 5:04 left in the game. Gunter, a 6-10 junior forward, had a team-high 16 points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots for Wyatt.

After Booker and Ndiaye hit back-to-back three-pointers with 2:29 left that upped the lead to 51-35 the Cougars knew the game was over.

Even a 9-0 run by Wyatt that sliced the lead to 51-44 with 1:05 left didn’t phase the Cougars. Booker went 4 of 4 from the line the rest of the way to keep the Chaps at bay on his way to a game-high 19 points. Booker was 9 of 9 from the stripe for the game.

Seguin out rebounded Wyatt 31-18 with Ndiaye and Lino Jackson grabbing six each for the Cougars while Xavion Brice had five rebounds and two assists.

Myles Rigsby added 12 points for Wyatt and Dwayne Bradley chipped in 10 points for the Chaps.

Seguin advances to the area round for the first time since 2017 and will face No. 15 Richland at 8 p.m. on Friday at UT-Arlington’s College Park Center.
