Mansfield Timberview 48, Mansfield Legacy 44

Timberview, No. 11 in the final Class 5A state rankings, pulled out to an early 7-0 lead and survived a late run by Legacy to down the Broncos in a Region 1 quarterfinal on Monday in Mansfield.

The Wolves (26-8), who defeated Legacy twice in District 8-5A play, advance to the regional tournament and will meet the winner of Tuesday’s Lubbock-Cooper (28-4)-Amarillo (29-5) contest. The Wolves semifinal will start at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls.

Desiree Wooten’s first of her three three-pointers gave the Wolves a 7-0 lead with 4:59 left in the first quarter. A basket by Tamaiya Mims at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter gave Timberview a 17-6 lead and the Wolves held on to that double digit margin until late in the third quarter.

Legacy (22-15) went on a 14-1 run starting with 2:49 left in the third. Maddie Griggs had two of her five three-pointers during the spree and a pair of Savannah Catalon free throws with 6:39 left in the game cut the Timberview lead to 29-28.

But the Wolves responded and another three-pointer by Wooten, who finished with 13 points, gave Timberview a 38-30 lead with 4:06 left and the Broncos were kept five to seven points down the rest of the way. A three by Catalon with 16 seconds left was too little too late.

Chrishawn Coleman led Timberview with 16 points including 10 of 12 points from the free throw line. Coleman hit 8 of 9 clutch free throws in the fourth quarter.

Catalon and Griggs were the only players to score for Legacy with 25 and 19 points respectively. Catalon was 14 of 19 from the foul line.

Argyle 60, Bridgeport 36

In a rematch of last season’s 4A Region 1 quarterfinal, Argyle got its revenge with a rout over Bridgeport on Monday night.

Argyle (35-0), the No. 1 4A team in the state, lost to Bridgeport in the quarterfinals last season, 37-36. The Eagles are in the regional tournament for the eighth time in the past nine seasons.

The Eagles will play Tuesday’s winner between Canyon and Levelland in the regional semifinals Friday night at Lubbock Christian.

Caroline Lyles poured in a game-high 28 points with five threes. Lyles scored 17 points in the first half with 11 on three threes in the second quarter.

Argyle led 14-5 after the first quarter and 35-14 at intermission.

Gabby Campbell added 12 points for the Eagles.

Lake Dallas 54, Mansfield Summit 47

Mackenzie Buss scored 18 points and Camryn Richardson made five threes in the first half as the Falcons hung on against a late Summit rally during the 5A Region 1 quarterfinal on Monday at Arlington ISD Athletics Center.

Lake Dallas (32-4) heads to the regional tourney for the second time in three years where it will play Tuesday’s winner between Lubbock Monterey and Canyon Randall in the regional semis on Friday at Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls.

Summit (23-12) trailed 36-19 at halftime, but came within five in the fourth quarter multiple times. Donterria Brown hit one from the foul line to pull the Jaguars within 37-27 with three minutes left in the third.

Jorja Elliott had a big basket to make it 12. Lake Dallas led 44-33 at the end of the period. Sydney Rice scored for Summit to make it five with five minutes left to play. But Elliott made two big time layups to give Lake Dallas a 48-39 lead with four minutes to go.

Summit got back within five again with under a minute left, but it wasn’t enough. The Jags were led by Rice’s 14 points. Destiny Whitaker added 11 and Brown finished with nine.
