Boys UIL State Wrestling Recap: Martin, Midlothian wrestlers win titles plus full results

The Allen boys captured their 13th straight UIL wrestling state championship during the Class 6A meet on Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.

Arlington Martin finished state runner-up for the eighth consecutive season.

Out of 14 weight classes, Allen had 12 wrestlers place in the top-6, including seven in the championship match and three state titles.

Martin had two state champs in freshman Isaak Arevalo (106) and junior Shawn Ryncarz (120).

Arevalo won his opening match on Friday with a pin fall in the first period against League City Clear Falls then 7-0 in the quarterfinals against PSJA. On Saturday, Arevalo opened the day with a 5-4 decision over Keller Central’s Kody Tanimoto. He defeated fellow freshman Miguel Solis of El Paso Eastwood in the title match by decision 3-0.

Ryncarz wrapped up a 34-2 season with 10-2 and 5-1 decisions on Friday. He defeated Cypress Ranch’s Xavior Harrell, 5-3, in the championship match.

Martin had a wrestler finish second (freshman Grayson Carpenter), two in third, one in fourth and two in sixth.

Byron Nelson finished in ninth place. Hasnat Raza was state runner up (170).

Tanimoto (106) finished in fourth during his first trip to state. He beat the No. 1 wrestler in the state from Allen in the quarterfinals. Central had two more place in Josh Garcia and Nikolas Govea. Cole Bennett of Southlake Carroll and Julian Garnica of Arlington Bowie finished in second and fourth place of the 138 class. Logan Mantezolo from Byron went fourth (182) while Timber Creek’s Tristan Winters and Carroll’s Peter Etheredge went second and third (220).

In 5A, Midlothian finished in fifth place and was led by Karson Tompkins’ state championship in the 182 class. The sophomore finished the season 43-1 with a pin fall in the second period in the final over Winnsboro senior Zeb Fulmer.

Tompkins, who won the 5A Region 2 meet, pinned all four opponents with the first two on Friday coming in the opening period. Henry Bumgarner and Eli Biermann also placed for Midlothian.

Gabe Aldaco of Grapevine was state runner up (113).
