Basketball recap (2/1): Brewer girls snap long playoff drought and more from Fort Worth area

Boys

Mansfield Summit 75, Mansfield Timberview 67

Five Summit players scored in double figures led by David Terrell’s 19 points as the Jaguars upset the Wolves in District 8-5A on Tuesday night. Both teams are 9-1 in district with the season series tied.

Richard Lemboye added 14 points for Summit while Maxwell Jones and Nick Shogbonyo chipped in 12 apiece. Frank Emmou had 11.

Summit led 22-12 after the first quarter with the Jags hitting three three-pointers. They extended the lead to 38-25 at intermission before Timberview made a push in the third quarter.

Timberview, No. 3 in the 5A state rankings, out scored Summit 19-14 in the third and got seven points apiece from Donovan O’Day and Chendall Weaver. But both teams scored 23 points each in the final period.

Weaver scored a game-high 24 points and O’Day added 20.

Grapevine Faith 77, FW Southwest Christian 60

The Lions pulled away in the second half to beat the Eagles and break a tie in the district standings in Fort Worth.

Faith improved to 6-2 in district and 22-9 overall while SCS dropped to 21-10 and 5-3.

The Eagles led 15-12 after the first quarter after back-to-back threes from Will Harwell. Both teams battled back and forth to begin the second quarter. A Josh Davis three tied the game at 22 and Faith extended its run to 8-0 after Davis’ layup put the Lions up 27-22.

Harwell hit a three just before the buzzer and SCS trailed Faith 29-27 at halftime. It was a close game in the third with several lead changes. Harwell hit a three to beat the buzzer again and Faith led 48-47 at the end of the third.

After Luke Benson hit Antwuan Polk for a SCS layup that made it 52-51 Faith early in the fourth, the Lions responded with a 13-0 run. Ryan Blevins hit a floater and Andrew Bruster made a straight away three in the middle of the period.

Faith hit nine threes with Bruster leading the team with four three-pointers and 20 points. Davis had 19, Blevins added 14 and Luke Brown chipped in 11. The Lions out scored the Eagles 29-13 in the fourth quarter.

Harwell scored a game-high 21 points for the Eagles with seven threes and Jacob Jackson added 18 points.

Girls

Brewer 53, Granbury 38

The Bears dominated the Pirates in the second half to win the District 5-5A showdown and in the process, clinched the program’s first playoff berth in 18 years.

Eryn McKinzie led the way with 23 points to help Brewer secure its first playoff trip since 2004. Aolani Woldai and Tori Colman added 13 and 11 points.

The two teams were neck and neck in the first half with Granbury leading 22-21 at halftime. Brewer out scored Granbury 14-7 in the third and 18-9 in the fourth. Overall, the Bears won the second half 32-16.

FW Southwest Christian 51, Grapevine Faith 50

The Eagles overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter to rally back past the Lions in Fort Worth.

Faith (5-3 in district) couldn’t miss in the first quarter and took a 24-16 lead following a layup by freshman MG Delahoz.

Faith upped the lead to 26-16 early in the second quarter, but the Eagles would fight back. Freshman Ananda Jenerson converted a three-point play to get it down to three points midway through the period.

Mary Grace King hit a corner three for SCS, but Faith led 35-29 at the break on a Camryn O’Rear assist to Sophia Girolamo. The Lions still led in the third quarter on a Delahoz three and Lauren O’Rear offensive putback.

But Teagan Milliken’s layup and two free throws from Jenerson got SCS within 40-39 after the third quarter. Jenerson hit a three to put the Eagles up 42-40 and a long step back jumper gave SCS a 44-42 lead with 5:07 left to play.

Delahoz tied the game at 44 before SCS scored the next six points to go up 50-44. Faith answered with six straight and Delahoz tied it at 50 with 22 seconds on the clock.

Trailing 51-50, Faith got the ball back with 15 seconds left, but missed on two layups in the paint before SCS rebounded and was fouled. But on the ensuing inbound pass, SCS turned it over and Faith recovered and was fouled just before the buzzer.

The foul sent the Lions to the line for a 1 and 1 with the score still at 51-50. However, the first attempt missed sending Southwest Christian to the victory and 8-0 record in district.

Jenerson led SCS with 17 points and Milliken added 13. The two combined for 19 of the team’s 21 second-half points. The Eagles held Faith to five points in the third and 10 in the fourth.

Delahoz led Faith with 22 points while Camryn O’Rear chipped in 13.
