Basketball recap (1/28): Crazy finish between Red Oak and Midlo, and more from Fort Worth-area
Boys
Red Oak 47, Midlothian 44
In one of the most insane endings to a basketball game, Red Oak hung on to beat upset-minded Midlothian in a big District 14-5A showdown at Midlothian on Friday night.
Red Oak, No. 20 in the 5A state rankings, now owns the season sweep over Midlo and improves to 8-0 in district. The Panthers drop to 6-2. They lost to the Hawks 63-62 on Jan. 4.
Trailing by two, the Panthers quickly transitioned and tied it at 44 on a Nathan Shepherd layup with one minute left.
After a free throw by Red Oak, the Hawks led 45-44 with 23 seconds to go. Still trailing by one, the Panthers got possession back when the Hawks were called out of bounds with 13 seconds on the clock. But Midlo turned it right over on an offensive foul call with six seconds.
Midlo was looking to foul Red Oak to reach seven team fouls so the Hawks could shoot free throws. The Panthers fouled twice, one with 5.1 left and one just before the final buzzer.
A long discussion between the officials and scoring table ensued for what felt like five minutes. Red Oak’s Kirk Queensbourough went to the line and 0.5 was put back on the clock, but the officials stopped play again and instead put Mark Broussard at the stripe with 5.1 on the clock.
It was learned that the foul at 5.1 was Midlo’s seventh foul, which would have put Red Oak to the line. But it was initially ruled the sixth, therefore play had continued.
After all that, Broussard missed the front end of the 1-and-1, but Shepherd was stripped of the ball near half court and Red Oak was fouled again. Queensbourough made both free throws and Midlo couldn’t get a final shot off before the buzzer.
Queensbourough had 14 points to lead Red Oak, all in the second half. He made four threes in the third quarter. Kelton Williams led Midlo with eight of his 14 coming in the first quarter. Shepherd added 10 of his 13 in the fourth and Calix Hampton chipped in 12.
The Panthers led 13-12 after the first quarter and scored the first five of the second. Hampton converted on a three-point play to make it 18-12. Red Oak came back to tie it at 18 before Midlo took a 20-18 lead into intermission.
The Hawks made five threes in the third, led by Queensbourough’s four treys and Red Oak went on a 10-0 run. It was extended to 18-4 as Red Oak led by 12. The Hawks were up 39-29 at the end of the period. Shepherd hit a three from the left wing to get Midlo back within three with six minutes left in the game.
