Basketball recap (1/25): Timberview beats Legacy with monster fourth quarter and more from Fort Worth area
Boys
Mansfield Timberview 65, Mansfield Legacy 63
Donovan O’Day converted the go-ahead three-point play with 11 seconds left and Timberview shut down Legacy’s ensuing possession to pull off the come-from-behind victory in District 8-5A on Tuesday night.
Timberview is ranked the No. 1 team in the area in Class 5A and No. 3 in the 5A state rankings. The Wolves, who trailed by as much as 15 points in the second half, moves to 8-0 in district and 25-3 overall.
The Wolves won their eighth straight game while the Broncos dropped to 18-7 and 5-3. Legacy is No. 10 in the state and No. 3 in the area.
Leading by three at halftime, Legacy hit a quick bucket and back-to-back threes from Wayne Wiggins and CJ Jordan to make it 39-30 with 6:45 left in the third quarter.
Amir McMillian’s three pushed it to 42-32 and Lejai Jordan hit from the corner to put Legacy up 13 midway through the period. McMillan added a short fade to go up 15.
Daniel Vieira-Tuck’s three helped Timberview get within 53-42 at the end of the third. The Wolves kept trimming, using a 23-10 fourth quarter edge. A couple of O’Day layups got it down to seven and it stayed seven at 61-54 with 1:07 to play.
Timberview got a steal and Jared Washington’s three from the wing made it four less than 10 seconds later. A Samir Dhalle three and Chendall Weaver layup cut the Legacy lead down to 63-62 with 20 seconds remaining.
O’Day finished with 24 points with 12 coming in the decisive quarter. Weaver added 13 and Washington chipped in nine. Wiggins led Legacy with 14 of his 23 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the fourth. McMillian added 12.
Legacy made just one field goal in the final period and went 8 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Azle 83, Wichita Falls 66
The Hornets got a game-high 28 points from Gavin Dean to win their 20th game of the season. Azle improved to 3-1 in District 5-5A.
Jayden Coffey added 16 and Campbell Dotson chipped in 12. Jayden Rollins finished with nine followed by eight from Cameron Newman and seven by Jackson Davis.
Azle, ranked in the top-10 area 5A rankings, doubled up the Coyotes 24-12 in the first quarter. The lead extended to 43-28 at the end of the second quarter.
Both teams scored 26 points apiece in the fourth quarter. The 83 points by Azle was its second most in a game this season.
Southlake Carroll 60, Keller Central 39
Christian O’Connor dropped a game-high 24 points as Carroll snapped its three-game skid and held Central to its second lowest output this season during a District 4-6A game.
Ben Estis added 14 points for the Dragons, who out scored the Chargers in all four quarters. They led 30-23 at halftime.
Central was held to four points in the third quarter and 16 in the second half. DaeVeon Scott led Central with nine points.
Carter Ruck added nine for Carroll.
Arlington Seugin 79, Burleson Centennial 69
The Cougars improved to 5-3 in District 8-5A after their double digit win over the Spartans.
Six Seguin players scored at least eight points, led by Ever Reyes’ 23 points. Mafatime Ndiaye added 21.
Xavion Brice had 10 and Jackson Lino, Andrew Huntley and Quinton Harris all had eight points.
Seguin led 20-15 after the first quarter and 38-27 at halftime. The Cougars pulled away with a 24-16 edge in the third.
Bryce Robinson led Centennial with 23 points. Jordan Weeks added 13 points, six dimes, four steals and three blocks. Jordan Jenkins chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds and Phillip Hamilton had nine points and three assists.
Arlington Bowie 54, South Grand Prairie 51
The Volunteers hung on to upset No. 23 SGP in District 8-6A. Tyson Matthews and Kelby Valsin both scored 13 points apiece.
SGP had trouble scoring all night as Bowie led 31-24 at the break. The Vols extended the lead to 43-34 after the third quarter.
Girls
Mansfield Timberview 58, Mansfield Legacy 44
The Wolves, the top-ranked 5A area team, scored 30 points in the final 13 minutes of game time to pull off the second-half comeback over Legacy in District 8-5A.
Timberview improves to 10-0 in district and 19-8 overall. Legacy, No. 2 in the 5A area rankings, drops to 7-3 and 18-12.
Legacy’s Sirviva Legions, who was nominated as a McDonald’s All-American, paced the Broncos throughout the game. Her assist to Ire Adewusi resulted in a three-point play as Legacy extended its run to 10-1 for a 20-16 lead in the second quarter.
Legions also got a three-point play and the run went to 13-1 with 2:44 left in the period. The run reached 10-0 and 15-1 before Timberview made a late push to trail by five at halftime.
A short jumper from Legions and a three by Maddie Griggs gave Legacy a 37-28 lead in the third quarter. From there it was all Timberview, finishing out 30-7 for the win.
Brooklyn Terry hit a couple of key shots and Desiree Wooten got a three-point play to help the Wolves pull within 40-38 at the end of the third. The run went to 18-3 and Kyia Smith hit a three to give the Wolves a 53-42 lead with 90 seconds left.
Wooten, the 2019 all-area MVP, scored 26 points with 19 coming in the second half and 12 in the fourth. Chrishawn Coleman added 16. Legions led Legacy with 20 and Griggs chipped in 12.
FW Dunbar 39, FW Eastern Hills 30
Tomi Graves led all scorers with 21 points and the Wildcats edged out the Highlanders in District 8-4A play.
Dunbar held Eastern scoreless in the first quarter and led 7-0. The Wildcats led 15-9 at halftime.
The Wildcats began to pull away after going 15-8 in the third quarter. Jordan McIntosh scored nine points for Dunbar.
Southlake Carroll 58, Keller Central 50
Milania Jordan and Camryn Tade combined for 40 points as the Dragons, the top-ranked 6A area team, kept their district record perfect at 9-0 and 23-4 overall.
Central, which was looking for its first district win of the season, gave the Dragons a scare. After the Chargers trailed 22-6 after the first quarter, Central used a 19-9 second quarter to pull within six at intermission.
Taryn Barnes added eight points for Carroll.
Central was led by Alena Camensky’s 24 points and Aubrey Wathen’s 14.
Boswell 58, Euless Trinity 38
Three Pioneers scored in double figures led by Nya Robertson’s 18 points in their District 3-6A win over the Trojans.
Robertson surpassed 2,000 points in her career.
Chloe Mann and Kayla Hill added 12 and 11 points.
Boswell, No. 2 in the area 6A rankings, hit 11 threes. Robertson was held scoreless in the first quarter and had just two points in the second quarter, but came out and scored six in the third and 10 in the fourth.
Alisha Nunley led Trinity with 15 points.
