Basketball recap (1/18): Colleyville Heritage boys beat Grapevine and more from Fort Worth area

Boys

Colleyville Heritage 73, Grapevine 57

Sammon Johnson scored 11 of his team-high 20 points in the first quarter and the Colleyville Heritage Panthers beat the Grapevine Mustangs in District 6-5A on Tuesday night.

The Panthers (15-8, 3-3) and Mustangs (16-9, 3-3) traded baskets early in the first quarter, but Grapevine’s last lead of the night would come at 10-9.

Heritage ended the first quarter with an 8-0 run as the Panthers led 17-10.

Johnson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark the Panthers’ run. He would end the opening period with a 3-point play. Heritage extended the run to 10-3 to go up double digits in the second quarter.

Mitch Williams, who led Grapevine with a game-high 21 points, hit a couple of threes to help pace the Mustangs in the second, but the Panthers kept their distance with baskets from Connor Hornberger. Heritage led 32-22 at intermission.

A pair of threes from the Panthers started the third quarter and Heritage led by 13 entering the fourth. Jaeden Bland made a layup and drew the foul and after hitting the free throw, Heritage led Grapevine 61-43.

Ten Panthers scored with Carson Jach adding 11 points. Tristan Strength chipped in 10 and Hornberger had nine. Bland finished with eight points. Jonathan Kabeya had nine rebounds and five assists.

Cole Calvery had 13 points for Grapevine. The Mustangs were held to 18 of 50 shooting including 6 of 22 from three.

Heritage shot over 50% on its 2-point attempts.

Mansfield Summit 70, Burleson Centennial 46

The rout was on as the Jaguars out scored the Spartans 26-8 after the opening quarter in their District 8-5A win.

The lead increased to 40-12 at halftime.

Summit improved to 5-1 in district.

Centennial dropped to 2-4.

Five Jaguars scored at least eight points led by Nick Shogbonyo’s 16 points.

Bryce Robinson led the Spartans with 10 points.

Keller 78, Keller Central 69

The Indians stayed in the lead in District 4-6A after beating the Chargers. Sven Verloop led Keller with 18 points.

Central never quite came back after falling behind 25-16 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 18 in the second and Keller won the third 15-14 while Central won the fourth 21-20.

Parker Hannah had 17 for Keller and Grayson Price added 16.

Wyatt Bell chipped in 12.

Mason Jones led Central with 18 points.

Mansfield Timberview 50, Everman 41

Timberview, the No. 1 Class 5A area team, beat the Bulldogs in a District 8-5A game on Tuesday night.

Jared Washington scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the first half. Braylon Crosby added eight points on the night and Donovan O’Day and Chendall Weaver chipped in six apiece.

The Wolves’ defense shut down the Bulldogs’ offense, holding Everman to five points in the first quarter and 12 in the first half.

Quazdron Lewis and Derek Williams led Everman with 15 and 12 points.

Girls

Grapevine 50, Colleyville Heritage 44

The Mustangs went 21 of 26 from the free-throw line to hep them push ahead of the Panthers in District 6-5A.

Olivia Hays (18 points) and Mimi Margiotta (16 points) led Grapevine. The pair scored all of the team’s 13 points in the fourth quarter, which all came from the charity stripe. They were a combined 18 of 23 at the line on the night.

Carly Snead hit a pair of baskets and a three from Avery Gaudet pushed Grapevine in front 14-4. Colleyville Heritage hit a long three from Hannah Berry just before the buzzer to trim the Grapevine lead to 16-9.

Hays hit a corner three and the Mustangs scored the first seven of the second quarter to up the lead. After leading by 10, the Mustangs’ lead got down to six on a three from Panthers’ forward Kaylee Lewis and a three-point play from Emi Steele.

Margiotta, who added four boards, three assists and two steals, hit a three and assisted on a Nadia Morris layup and Grapevine led 37-26 after the third quarter.

The lead got up to 13, but then Heritage rallied with a three from Lewis and Lilly Olmos. Then Olmos got a steal and Steele hit another 3-point play to make it a four-point game with under a minute left, but Grapevine hung on with free throws down the stretch.

Grapevine moved to 18-10 overall and 4-4 in district while Heritage dropped to 10-16 and 4-4.

Steele led Heritage with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. Aniya Rhonden added nine points and six rebounds.

Grapevine picked up 30 rebounds and went 13 of 32 from the field. Heritage was 17 of 52 including 4 of 19 from downtown.

Aledo 53, Wichita Falls Rider 52

Three Ladycats scored in double figures led by Addyson Hebel’s 20 points and Aledo hung on late to beat Rider in District 5-5A.

Presley Hull and Kandle Boggus added 13 and 11 points.

Aledo led 13-8 after the first quarter and 27-25 at halftime. But Rider would go in front 40-36 after three. The Ladycats would win the fourth quarter 17-12.

Aledo led by five late, but Rider pushed the Ladycats to the edge until the Ladycats were able to hit free throws down the stretch.

Claire Byars scored six points and Reagan Davis had three to round out Aledo’s scoring.

Southlake Carroll 48, Byron Nelson 32

Milania Jordan scored 17 and Camryn Tade added 12 as Carroll, the top-ranked Class 6A team in the area, remained undefeated in District 4-6A after the win over the Bobcats.

Carroll improved to 7-0 and 21-4 overall.

The Bobcats kept the game close only trailing 14-12 after the opening frame. But Carroll extended the lead to 29-20 at halftime and 43-28 after three.

Taryn Barnes finished with eight points for Carroll.

Chania Price and Hannah Pinney led Byron with 15 and 10 points.

Keller Fossil Ridge 66, Eaton 51

Ashia McSwain poured in a game-high 26 points as the Panthers beat the Eagles in a District 4-6A matchup.

Ridge also got double figures from Jade Masogayo (12), LaKyla McSwain (11) and Adriana Robles (10).

Ashia McSwain hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and the Panthers led 20-8. She added her fourth in the second and the lead was 32-21 at the break.

Brylee Bailey and Haleigh Jackson led Eaton with 22 and 15 points.

LD Bell 58, Chisholm Trail 36

Twin forwards Hallie and Jayden Rhodes combined to score 46 of Bell’s 58 points in the Blue Raiders’ District 3-6A win over the Rangers.

Bell improved to 21-7 overall and 7-1 in district.

Hallie scored 27 points while Jayden added 19.

Bell took care of business in the first half with a 14-4 lead after the opening period and 28-12 lead at half.

Sydney Allen led Chisholm with 21 points.
