Brock continues its imposing playoff run, routs Whitesboro in rematch showdown
Brock and Whitesboro were tied at 21 by halftime during their Week 7 district showdown in October before the Eagles pulled away for a 42-21 win.
Nearly two months later, Brock put its stamp on the game early and left no doubt about moving on.
The Eagles won the rematch on Thursday night, 49-14, in a Class 3A Division 1 state quarterfinal at Globe Life Field. Brock (14-0), which routed defending champ Tuscola Jim Ned last week, advances to the state semifinals for the fifth time in seven seasons.
“That [last game] was on our mind all week long,” said Brock coach Billy Mathis, who came over from Weatherford in the spring. “We threw a pick six and blew some coverages, and really gave them a chance to score on us. We didn’t play well in the first half so we wanted to right that wrong. Those guys were saying they beat themselves and that really struck a chord with our guys.
“They wanted to make sure at the end of this game that the Brock Eagles won and nobody beat themselves.”
Brock will play Mount Vernon (14-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at McKinney ISD Stadium.
It was the Kutter and Tutter show throughout for Brock with running backs Kutter Wilson and Brett Tutter. Both players combined for Brock’s first five touchdowns.
Brock killed nearly five minutes during the opening possession, but came away empty after missing a 32-yard field goal. But Whitesboro turned it over on its first play from scrimmage on a Zachary Brewster interception.
Brewster got to the Bearcat 7 and Wilson punched it in two plays later from the 2 midway through the first quarter.
Wilson added his second touchdown run, from the 12, to up the Brock lead to 14-0 with 2:51 to play in the period. Wilson, who’s over 2,300 yards and 30 TDs on the season, was hit hard near the ankle area with six seconds left in the first quarter.
He wouldn’t return, finishing with 12 carries for 78 yards and the two scores.
But Brock didn’t seem to miss a beat with the sophomore Tutter. The 5-10 running back/defensive back scored from 7 yards out to extend the Eagles lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter.
“Kutter could’ve came back in two or three plays later. He was ready at half, we checked him out, no pain, but the way we were up and then Tutter coming in, just a solid sophomore with great speed and great vision, we didn’t have to bring Kutter back in,” Mathis said. “But it goes back to the offensive line. They did a great job and Tyler Moody, the stud quarterback that he is. The offensive staff did a phenomenal job spreading it around.”
Tutter’s second TD run came from the 20 to make it 28-0 with 4:34 in the half.
His third was a 1-yard scoring run that came in the third quarter.
Tutter finished with 19 carries for 94 yards and the three touchdowns.
“I get in and make sure I run. I follow the line. The line did a great job,” Tutter said.
Brock continued to play stout defense when Reid Watkins got his team-leading fifth interception during the third quarter and the Eagles turned it into points on a 33-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Moody to receiver Elijah Potts.
It came on a fourth-and-12 and Brock led 42-0.
“It starts with the defensive line. I always give credit to the defensive line,” Watkins said. “They force the ball out quickly and it makes it easy for us corners and safeties to make a play. Not only that, but we also shut down their run game.
“We wanted to leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that we’re the best 3A team.”
Moody and Potts connected again, from 24 yards, to give Brock a 49-7 advantage with 4:20 left in the game.
Whitesboro (9-5), which made it to the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history, finally scored on a 5-yard toss from quarterback Mac Harper to Jake Hermes with under a minute left in the third.
The Bearcats would score again with under 10 seconds remaining on a Clay Hermes 5-yard run. The Brock defense held Whitesboro to 64 yards rushing and 139 passing. The Bearcats gained just 28 yards on offense during the first half.
Moody threw for 222 yards with eight passes for 120 and two scores going to Potts.
