High school football playoff preview: Top Fort Worth-area games and players to watch

The Texas high school football playoffs continue this week with UIL state quarterfinals and TAPPS state championship games, and we dive into the top Fort Worth-area games to watch as well as top players.

Top games

Allen (11-2) vs. Southlake Carroll (13-0)

2 p.m. Saturday, UNT’s Apogee Stadium

It’s the Class 6A Division 1 Region 1 final between two football powers where the winner advances to the state semifinals.

Allen is coming off an impressive 59-21 win over Euless Trinity. Quarterback Mike Hawkins accounted for five touchdowns. Other players to watch include running backs Jaylen Jenkins and Devyn Turner. Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has 1,294 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns.

The Eagles have scored 584 points this season and ride a four-game winning streak.

The Dragons are playing in the state quarterfinals for the fifth straight season and look to punch their ticket to the state semis for a second in a row.

Carroll beat Lewisville 52-0 last week and is outscoring opponents by an astonishing 610-161.

Mansfield Summit (10-3) vs. Colleyville Heritage (12-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Birdville HS

It will be the second meeting this season and third in the past two years for the Jaguars and Panthers. Summit won last year’s playoff matchup 34-31. Heritage won the first meeting this season 35-34.

Summit rides a six-game win streak and is holding opponents to under 20 points per game this season.

Heritage has won 10 in a row and the offense is putting up over 40 points per game.

The Panthers made 17 tackles for loss and 11 sacks last week against Amarillo Tascosa.

Springtown (10-3) vs. Wichita Falls Hirschi (11-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Allen HS

The Porcupines are in the quarterfinals for the third straight season and look to punch their ticket into the Class 4A Division 1 state semifinals.

They take on district opponent Hirschi, losing 40-30 in October and have since won six straight. During that span, Springtown is outscoring opponents 262-95.

After dropping its first two games of the season, Hirschi has won 11 in a row. The Huskies are averaging 45 points per game in the playoffs.

Whitesboro (9-4) vs. Brock (13-0)

7 p.m. Thursday, Globe Life Field, Arlington

In 13 games, the Brock Eagles have held seven opponents to under 10 points. They put up 70 points last week in their win over defending state champ Jim Ned.

Brock is averaging over 50 points per game while the defense has allowed 11 a game.

Brock beat Whitesboro in a district matchup earlier this season, 42-21. Tyler Moody threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns and Kutter Wilson rushed for 197 and two scores.

The Whitesboro Bearcats are in the state quarterfinals for the first time after beating Shallowater 50-25.

Bulverde Bracken Christian (10-0) vs. Fort Worth Covenant Classical (11-2)

7 p.m. Thursday, Waco ISD Stadium

Covenant is playing in its first TAPPS state championship in program history.

The Cavaliers have won eight straight and average over 70 points per game this season. The Cavs took six-man power Richland Springs the distance 119-112 and scored 97 on fellow power Strawn.

The Bracken Warriors are outscoring opponents this season 59-14.
