State cross country results: Southlake Carroll 3-peats, Grapevine boys go back-to-back
The Southlake Carroll boys cross country team won its third consecutive UIL Class 6A state title defeating The Woodlands and 2020 runner-up El Paso Eastwood on Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
It wasn’t only the Dragons’ third straight championship, but also the 12th consecutive year the boys program has finished either first or second place at the UIL state meet.
The Carroll girls just missed the medal stand, finishing fourth. Flower Mound repeated as the 6A state champion, followed by Prosper and The Woodlands.
“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women,” Southlake Carroll head coach Justin Leonard said. “After graduating so many seniors last year, we asked a lot of our underclassmen to step up and take leadership roles and all they did was lead us to a third straight boys state title and the 25th consecutive year for the girls qualifying for the state meet. I’m honored to be their coach.”
In the varsity boys race, junior David Fisher finished ninth place overall, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:39. Sophomore Jude Alvarez finished 10th place in 15:40, followed by juniors Robert Freeman (11th, 15:43), Hunter Hill (13th, 15:50) and Logan Cantu (21st, 15:54).
Junior Tyler Ortiz (30th, 16:02) and senior Welles McDevitt (51st, 16:21) rounded out the Dragon runners.
Senior Kaylie Cox was the top Dragon runner in the girls race, finishing 14th overall with a time of 18:20. Sophomore Sylvia Schwedler was next (20th, 18:33), followed by freshman Elizabeth Smits (24th, 18:40), junior Ava Bushaw (27th, 18:49) and sophomore Alexandra Walsh (43rd, 19:16). Juniors Natalie Ng (49th, 19:21) and Audrey Dunn (56th, 19:27) were the Dragons’ final two finishers.
The Eaton girls team finished in ninth place with sisters Kyla and Izzy Lochtefeld as the top two runners, finishing in 26th and 30th place, respectively.
In the 5A boys race, Grapevine repeated as state champs beating out Denton by nearly 50 points. Lucas Lovejoy came in third.
The Mustangs were led by junior Walker St. John, who defends his state championship and won the race by nearly four seconds. St. John, who won the title last season, also won a state title in the 1600 during the track and field season in the spring.
Grapevine had four runners in the Top 10 with St. John, Trey Leathers (3rd), Josue Granados (7th) and Alberto Rayon (10th). Aledo finished in 13th place with Isaac Hernandez as its high man in ninth place.
The Colleyville Heritage girls finished fourth, 10 points shy of third-place Drippings Springs. Grapevine finished seventh. Colleyville’s Allie Love, a sophomore, as 5A state runner-up, adding to her already impressive high school career. Love finished six seconds back of state champ Cameron McConnell of Canyon Randall. Allie’s sister, Gabby, came in 16th place.
Grapevine’s Kylie Himes (11th) and Lila Nicodemus (19th) finished in the Top 20.
Argyle boys finished runner-up in the Class 4A race, four points shy of state champ San Elizario. Mason White came in sixth place and Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis’ Angel Sanchez came in fourth place. The Argyle girls came in ninth place.
