Colleyville Heritage gets back at Grapevine and more from the Fort Worth area

Grapevine got the better of Colleyville Heritage when the two teams met the first time this season. The Mustangs swept the Panthers, who at the time were the top-ranked Class 5A team in the Fort Worth-area.

Heritage, now No. 2, made sure to return the favor.

The Panthers swept the Mustangs, in front of a roaring crowd, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 on Tuesday in Colleyville to improve to 31-9 overall and 7-1 in District 6-5A.

The Mustangs dropped to 11-15 and 5-3.

Grapevine owned a 17-14 lead in the first behind a block from its star player, Missouri committed outside hitter Janet deMarrais. But Heritage answered with a 9-3 run to go up 23-20. Morgan Howard hit a ball through the Grapevine block and Air Force commit Reagan Engler had four blocks on one rally that turned into a point.

Houston commit Ella Busey took a Howard pass and sent down a kill on set point.

Olivia Hays and deMarrais paced Grapevine early in the second set as the Mustangs controlled the lead, but again Heritage would rally. Trailing 14-11, the Panthers turned it into a 19-18 lead on a kill from freshman Lucy Cisneros. Maddie Bird converted an overpass and Howard connected with Busey on the final point for a 2-0 edge.

Colleyville Heritage opened the third with 5-0 and 6-1 leads. Grapevine responded to pull within one multiple times, but the Panthers never trailed. Howard, who finished with a game-high 32 assists, perfected a one-handed dump behind her back that made it 20-16 and Madelyn Hanlon picked up the ace on match point.

Busey had 19 kills for the Panthers while Hanlon and Bird added eight apiece. Lindsey Houran had a team-high 14 digs and Engler made five blocks.

Wichita Falls Rider 3, Aledo 0

With the winner taking over first place in District 5-5A, Rider made the road trip to Parker County and left with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 sweep over the Ladycats on Tuesday night.

The Raiders are 18-8 and 4-0 while the Ladycats drop to 19-14 and 3-1.

Aledo had the early lead, but Rider made a push to grab a 19-13 lead in the first set. Sadie Portmann slammed down an attempt on set point to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Trailing by five, Aledo got kills from Vivian Parker and Sam Smith, and a block from Maddie Frank to pull within one multiple times, but Rider closed out strong and got a Kenzie Debetaz kill past the block for a 2-0 lead.

The Ladycats opened the third strong with a Skylar Ellison block and Parker point, but again, Rider went on a run that extended to 7-0 that pushed its lead to 12-9.

Aledo got within one following a pair of nice digs from Smith and Mia Little before a Rider ball went out of bounds, but the Ladycats could never take the lead in the third set in defeat.

Parker had a team-high 13 kills while Frank added nine. Mattie Gantt had 31 assists and 10 digs. Little led Aledo with 20 digs and Smith chipped in 13 digs.

Justin Northwest 3, Birdville 0

The Texans, No. 3 in the area Class 5A rankings, kept pace with Colleyville Heritage on top the district with a home sweep over the Hawks, 25-23, 25-6, 25-22 on Tuesday.

Northwest moves to 22-9 overall and 7-1 in 8-5A.

Northwest is tied with Heritage at 7-1, but the Panthers did sweep their first meeting.

Texas commit MaKenna Miller led the way with 14 kills and four digs, and hit .379. Lydia Seymour chipped in seven kills and Julianna Green and Sophie Chambers each put in six kills and 12 digs. Chambers added 17 assists.

Madison Scrivner had 19 assists for Northwest and Alyssa Rojo had 12 digs.

Birdville dropped to 3-5 in district and 20-16 overall.

Grandview 3, Dallas Madison 0

The Zebras improved their mark to 25-8 overall and 9-0 in District 9-3A with a convincing sweep over the Trojans on Tuesday, 25-7, 25-8, 25-4. Grandview entered No. 7 in the area Class 4A/3A rankings.

Kenzi Williamson, the Fort Worth-area leader in aces, added to her total with 13 along with 20 assists. Shelby Martin and Olivia Bauerschlag added six kills apiece for the Zebras.

Mansfield Timberview 3, Mansfield Legacy 2

The Timberview Wolves outlasted the Legacy Broncos at home to pick up a huge District 8-5A win. Legacy entered the night second in the district standings.

Timberview improves to 5-3 while Legacy drops to 6-2.

It was the Wolves’ first volleyball win over the Broncos in six seasons.

Reese Robins, the area leader in kills, had 35 kills and 10 blocks for the Wolves. Rhayan Earl added 12 kills and Amelia Oliver put in 45 assists. Kayla Benavides recorded 25 digs and Nia Johnson chipped in eight kills and 12 digs.

Southlake Carroll 3, Keller Timber Creek 1

Already over the 2,000 assist mark in her career, West Virginia committed setter Jessica Dunn went over the 1,000 assist mark this season in Carroll’s 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23 road win over Timber Creek on Tuesday.

The Dragons snapped a two-game skid and moved to 21-14 overall and 5-2 in 4-6A.

The Falcons dropped to 19-14 and 3-4.

Dunn finished with 42 assists. Tulane beach commit McKenzie Cutler had 15 kills and 13 digs while USC beach commit Kaylee Young had a game-high 17 kills. Gabi Engels added 10 kills. Audrey Kubiak led with 25 digs.

Halle Sherlock led Timber Creek with 39 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Three Falcons had 10 kills, Alexa Ranete (14), Callie Muff (13) and Alisa Ranete (11). Six Falcons had 10 or more digs.

Keller Fossil Ridge 3, Keller Central 2

Lainee Pyles registered a whopping 40 kills as the Panthers out-dueled the Chargers on Tuesday night, 25-20, 25-27, 25-21, 27-29, 15-10 to open the second half of district play.

Pyles added 24 digs, three blocks and hit .367.

Four other Panthers had 10 digs, Alyssa Castillo (22), Iylan Collier (16), Emerson Conn (12) and Sofia Valentin (12). Collier and Valentin had 29 and 25 assists, respectively.

Fossil Ridge moved to 17-13 overall and 2-5 in 4-6A.

Central dropped to 15-16 and 1-6.
