Softball/Baseball recap: Northwest pitcher no-hits Burleson, Granbury jumps on Grapevine

SOFTBALL

Justin Northwest 2, Burleson 0

Behind a no-hitter from Abi Young, the Northwest Texans took the early advantage against the Elks in their Class 5A area round series Thursday night at Northwest. Game 2 is 6:30 pm Friday at Burleson.

Young, a sophomore, went the distance and struck out 12 batters on 79 pitches.

Her counterpart, Burleson’s Brailey Wasik pitched well going six innings and striking out 13. She allowed three hits and two unearned runs in the fifth. After Northwest got two runners on via error, Sadie Reid’s two-run single was more than enough for the Texans.

Young was two hit batters away from a perfect game. She threw 60 strikes.

Mansfield Lake Ridge 4, Wylie 3

The Eagles outlasted the Pirates in Game 1 of their Class 6A area round series in Wylie.

Game 2 is 7 pm Friday at Lake Ridge.

Denton Guyer 19, SGP 0

The Guyer Wildcats produced 20 hits and got a combined no-hitter from Ranci Willis and Alli Stidham to down the Warriors in Game 1 of their Class 6A area round series at Guyer.

Willis (Texas Tech) struck out 11 batters in four innings.

Stidham also homered, doubled and drove in four runs. Bre Jackson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Game 2 is 7:30 pm Friday at SGP.

Flower Mound 8, Grand Prairie 2

Landrie Harris allowed one hit and struck out 18 batters as the Jaguars picked up the win over the Gophers in their Class 6A area round series at GPHS Thursday night.

Game 2 is 7 pm Friday at Flower Mound.

The Jags picked up win No. 30 behind three runs in the first and four in the third. McKenna Andrews scored on a passed ball and Katie Cantrell drove in a run for a 2-0 lead.

Harris singled in a run in the third to extend the lead to 5-1 and a GP error made it 7-1. Brooke Nauman added a solo home run in the seventh.

BASEBALL

Granbury 3, Grapevine 1

The Pirates got the jump on the No. 1 seeded Mustangs in their Class 5A bi-district series Thursday night at Granbury. Game 2 is 7:30 pm Friday at Grapevine.

Taylor Calcote and Cameron Collins combined for a three-hitter and struck out nine. Calcote got the win for the Pirates going six innings with two hits and seven strikeouts.

Grapevine got the early lead in the first inning off a Granbury error, but the Pirates answered with two in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Collins and Calcote got back-to-back RBI hits.

Matthew Walters, who went 3 for 3, added an insurance run with a homer to left in the fifth.

Saginaw 5, Mansfield Timberview 4

The Rough Riders stunned the Wolves with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win Game 1 of their Class 5A bi-district series Thursday at Saginaw.

Game 2 is 7 pm Friday at Timberview.

With one out, Saginaw’s Myles Ventura drew a walk and scored the next batter later on Dylan Garcia’s RBI double to center field that cut the deficit to 4-3. Garcia advanced to third on a Timberview error and scored to tie the game at 4-4. Three batters later with two outs, Marshall Johnson hit a 1-2 pitch to center for the walk-off victory.

Both teams scored in the first inning with Saginaw’s Adam Gonzalez getting the RBI single to tie the game.

Timberview took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI from Kevin Schoneboom. The Wolves extended the lead to 4-2 in the sixth on an RBI double from Joaquin Hernandez.
