No sweep for DFW area as Frisco Wakeland denied by Dripping Springs in 5A title game
Taylor Hodsden’s goal in the 46th minute gave Dripping Springs its only lead and Caroline Dill responded after giving up an early score as the Tigers beat Frisco Wakeland, 2-1, in the girls UIL 5A state soccer championship Friday afternoon at Birkelbach Field.
Dripping Springs (27-1-1) captures its first title in program history.
The Tigers had previously gone 0-2 in championship matches.
They also denied Wakeland (20-3-3) its third in as many tries. Dallas-Fort Worth won’t be going 6 for 6 over the weekend. One area team from the Metroplex is playing in all six championship games (3 girls, 3 boys).
Midlothian Heritage won the 4A title Friday morning.
Knotted a 1-1 at intermission, Sofia Picucci’s forward pass six minutes after the break found Hodsden who turned and beat the keeper in the lower near post for the eventual game winner.
Dill made five saves overall and played aggressive defense out of the box at times.
She was voted MVP.
Wakeland, which won state in 2018, took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Ally Perry played a through ball to McKenna Jenkins who beat Dill one-on-one from about 10 yards out.
Bt the Tigers got some momentum back scoring just before halftime.
Riley Sisson scored, unassisted, into the far post 20 yards away in the 38th minute.
Wakeland dominated the shots 13-4 with 7-2 coming on goal.
Since 1999, DFW has never swept the state championships. DFW girls went 3 for 3 in 2015 and 2016 while boys have won just five times since the UIL jumped to three classes in 2015.
However, it is the first season where DFW is represented in all six finals.
