Soccer recap: Diamond Hill-Jarvis boys continue historic run, Grapevine girls return to state

BOYS

Diamond Hill-Jarvis 2, Mineral Wells 1 OT

With just under four minutes left in the second overtime period, Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis senior captain Jonathan Lopez was facing not only the biggest shot of his career, but the biggest in the boys soccer program’s history.

Lopez made a slight hesitation toward the ball, catching the Mineral Wells goal keeper off guard just enough and buried the 10-yard penalty kick to help DHJ outlast the Rams for the Class 4A Region 1 championship Friday night at Aledo HS.

The Eagles (24-4-2) advance to the Class 4A state semifinals to take on Celina or Palestine, which continued their Region 2 title game late Friday night.

It’s the first team sport in the school’s history to reach a state semifinal.

A physical showdown to say the least, both teams had their chance for the go-ahead goal in the overtime frame. After a long boot landed at the feet of Eduardo Lopez, the senior turned and made a run inside the box when he was taken down with a foul.

After a brief pause to check on Eduardo Lopez, Jonathan Lopez attempted the PK with 3:58 left in the second extra period and finished with a no-doubter.

DHJ controlled most of the game with a 1-0 lead until the Rams (15-4-1) tied it in the 54th minute. Marvin Renteria got inside the box and chipped a short kick to Jovan Ramirez, who headed in the score.

The Eagles scored the game’s first goal in the 10th minute on an Edward Zuniga corner attempt that found the foot of Eduardo Lopez in a scrum inside the box.

Mineral Wells had an opportunity to square the game with an attempt in the 22nd minute and again early in the second half on a Renteria free kick that went high.

DHJ nearly took the lead late in regulation in the 61st, 65th and 79th minutes.

El Paso Del Valle 2, Colleyville Heritage 0

Roberto Jauregui scored two goals in the 33rd and 76th minutes to end Colleyville Heritage’s best season in program history during the Class 5A Region 1 title game Friday in Midland.

The Panthers end the season with a 20-5-2 record.

GIRLS

Grapevine 3, Amarillo 1

The Mustangs got a scare in the second half, but held off Amarillo in the Class 5A Region 1 final Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.

Grapevine (23-2-2) advances to the state semifinals for the fourth time in seven seasons (first since 2018) to face Frisco Wakeland (19-2-3), which defeated previously unbeaten Highland Park 2-1 in overtime.

Grapevine took advantage of a brisk wind in the first half scoring twice off set pieces.

A throw in by Sammie Lumpkin made it all the way to the net where the Sandies’ goalkeeper tipped it in the air. Samantha Larsen headed in the rebound to give Grapevine a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

In the 17th minute, Naomi Jeter found a loose ball in a melee in front of the net, after a controlled corner kick, and punched it in from 11 yards out to put the Mustangs up 2-0.

The Grapevine back line of Jeter, Lumpkin, Sarah Griffin and Jenna Leverett along with goalkeeper Ashley Knight kept the game that way until the 52nd minute when Amarillo (17-2-2) cut the lead in half.

Nicole Gray bumped off a Grapevine defender during a rush and fed Mollie Ferro who put it home from six yards out for the Sandies to cut the lead to 2-1.

Lumpkin did it again nine minutes later to regain the two-goal cushion. Her throw in from 15 yards out, into the wind, made its way over the head of the Sandies’ GK, bounced off the crossbar and right into the thigh of Olivia Nevin who rolled it in for a 3-1 lead.

The Woodlands 1, Mansfield Lake Ridge 0

Lake Ridge’s best run came to a halt in the Class 6A Region 2 championship Friday at Manor HS.

The Eagles wrap up the season with an 18-5-2 record.

Marley Krach scored in the 16th minute for The Woodlands, which improved to 22-1. Lake Ridge nearly tied it in the 60th minute, but The Woodlands’ goalie Bella Hollenbach made a great save.

Midlothian Heritage 1, Argyle 0

Rachel Allen’s goal in the eighth minute was just enough to send the Jaguars past the Eagles in the Class 4A Region 1 championship Friday at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.

Heritage (24-1) is headed to the state semis for the second time. The Jags won a state title in 2018.

Jaedyn Barela posted the clean sheet while helping Heritage to its 14th straight win and 17th shutout.
