Playoff soccer recap: Lake Ridge girls win in OT, Diamond Hill-Jarvis boys win late
GIRLS
Mansfield Lake Ridge 4, Tomball Memorial 2 OT
The Eagles came into Tuesday’s Class 6A Region 2 semifinal winless in three previous regional semifinal games, but the program broke through with a big overtime victory over Memorial at Corsicana.
Alicia Riggins scored twice to lead Lake Ridge (18-4-2) to its first regional final berth.
Callie Conrad and Kaylee Mosely also scored.
Lake Ridge will play The Woodlands (21-1) with the winner clinching a state berth. The Woodlands outlasted Mansfield 7-6 in penalty kicks.
The two teams were knotted at 2-2 after regulation and the first period of overtime before Lake Ridge scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
Flower Mound 5, Haslet Eaton 0
The Jaguars put an end to the Eagles’ best playoff run in program history with a shutout in a Class 6A Region 1 semifinal on Tuesday at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.
Flower Mound (20-1-2) possessed the ball more throughout the game and managed a few shots and four corner kicks in the first half, but with no luck.
Eaton goal keeper Amia Harris and the Eagles’ back line hung tough and went into half 0-0.
The game remained scoreless until the 51st minute when Flower Mound scored on a Sydney Becerra goal inside the box. Riley Baker raced past a defender, scooted a pass that found Becerra who turned and scored off the right foot.
Baker scored three minutes later off the header from a corner kick. She scored her second in the 60th minute from the left side and about 20 yards out.
Kendal Nelson added FM’s fourth goal with 15 minutes left and the Jags scored another late.
Eaton finishes the year 9-8-8 with a second place finish in District 4-6A and first trip to the regional semis.
FM Marcus 3, Keller 0
The Marauders shut down the Indians on Tuesday at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine to set up a Flower Mound showdown for the Class 6A Region 1 championship.
Marcus improves to 20-3-5. It went 0-1-1 vs. its district counterpart with a 3-2 loss coming in the second round of district play.
Keller, fourth place from 4-6A, wraps up the season at 9-8-5.
Both teams had trouble on offense with only one shot on goal, a Marcus free kick, in the game’s opening 10 minutes. Marcus scored in the 14th minute on a throw-in that found Bella Campos near the net.
Then the Marauders perfected a goal that started 75 yards away and ended in a Nina Mazzola score from 10 yards out. After two passes down field, Piper Hemperly took a ball and knocked it with her heel in a no-look effort that found Mazzola.
Marcus added a third goal in the second half.
Grapevine 3, Abilene Wylie 1
For the fourth time in seven seasons, the Mustangs are headed to the regional final after taking down Wylie in a Class 5A Region 1 semifinal on Tuesday at Mineral Wells.
Grapevine (23-2-2) will look for its fourth trip to state in seven years when it takes on Amarillo in the regional final. Amarillo eliminated Burleson Centennial 3-0.
The Mustangs scored in the 11th and 27th minutes and led 2-0 at intermission.
Wylie scored in the 46th minute and Grapevine added an insurance goal with 7:48 left in the game.
BOYS
FW Diamond Hill-Jarvis 2, Stephenville 1
Edward Zuniga scored in the 77th minute and the Eagles beat the Yellow Jackets in a Class 4A Region 1 semifinal Tuesday at Aledo.
Zuniga scored both goals for DHJ (23-4-2), which heads to the regional final for the first time in program history.
Mineral Wells 3, Castleberry 2
Castleberry scored two second half goals, but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Rams downed the Lions in a Class 4A Region 1 semifinal Tuesday at Brewer.
The Rams (15-3-1) will face DHJ in the regional championship, their first in program history.
Mineral Wells coach Rolando Borjon said before the game that at this point in the playoffs you need a lucky bounce or two. The Rams got that twice in the first half after Castleberry (24-5-1) applied most of the pressure for the first 16 minutes.
With a strong wind at their backs, a 40-yard free kick by Marvin Renteria deflected off the Castleberry goalkeeper and Cristian Narvaez was there to knock in the rebound to give Mineral Wells a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Four minutes later another rebound and put back by Diego Andrade put the Rams up 2-0 which held up until the half. Mineral Wells packed to box on defense when Castleberry had the wind in the second half. But the Rams got a goal from Renteria in the 42nd minute when he wrestled the ball away from two defenders and rifled a cross passed the Lions GK from eight yards out.
Castleberry rallied with two long chip shots that were headed in close to the net. Esteban Mercado got the first in the 44th minute and Diego Rivera headed in the second off a 48-yard pop up by Luis Bejar in the 76th minute.
The Lions put on plenty of pressure in the final four minutes, but couldn’t crack Rams’ goalkeeper Angel Dominguez and the rest of the Mineral Wells back line.
“These kids are the greatest team in Castleberry history,” said Lions’ coach Paul Smith who graduates six seniors. “They hold themselves to a high standard and they practice that way. They’re a great group of kids and, as you saw, they literally fight until the last second.”
Colleyville Heritage 3, Amarillo Palo Duro 1
The Panthers join DHJ as first timers to the regional final after they knocked off Palo Duro in a Class 5A Region 1 semifinal on Tuesday at Abilene Wylie.
CHHS (20-4-2) will play El Paso Del Valle in its first regional final after Del Valle took down Grapevine 4-1.
Aidan Shimmick, Cade Ryan and Mac Oliver scored for the Panthers. Daniel Osorio, Rami Helou and Nate Jackson recorded assists.
