BOYS

Southlake Carroll 5, Euless Trinity 0

Carroll got two goals from Pato Sanchez and smothered Trinity any time the Trojans possessed the ball to come away with the victory in a Class 6A bi-district game Friday night at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine.

“It was a solid first step,” said Carroll coach Aaron Cottrell whose team was upset in the first round two years ago by Hebron. “Out of all of our guys, only one has played in a playoff game before. Part of it is because of Covid last year, but we were telling the guys that the playoffs are a completely different game with a completely different intensity and you have to come out firing and they responded well.”

Sanchez opened the scoring with a goal in the 8th minute off an assist by Jack Meyer and blasted in a left footer from 11 yards out in the 47th minute to give Carroll a 4-0 lead.

“He’s one of our team leaders, obviously, one of our captains, but his flexibility and range of motion is incredible,” said Cottrell of Sanchez. “He’s just a really crafty, smart leader for us.”

Sanchez’s second goal came just two minutes after Michael Grimm assisted goals on the first of his two corner kicks. Clayton Wayland headed in the first corner for a 3-0 Carroll lead and Corbin Duwe capped the scoring in the 77th minute when he chipped in a corner from Grimm that made it all the way through the box on the ground.

Sanchez assisted on a goal by Drake Ferri in the 30th minute. A log jam of players in front of the net pushed the ball to Sanchez who calmly passed the ball over to Ferri who swept it home.

Trinity (12-9-1) was never able to get into any kind of rhythm on offense as the Dragons challenged every ball when the Trojans had possession.

Carroll (13-3-1) will meet undefeated El Paso Eastlake (19-0-0) in the area round at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Lubbock Christian University.

FW Trimble Tech 1, Mansfield Summit 0 (5-3 SO)

Summit entered Friday night 23-1-2 overall this season and ranked as the No. 1 Fort Worth-area boys soccer team. Its only loss came in a 4-0 defeat to FW Wyatt early in the year.

But the record and rankings didn’t scare Trimble Tech as the No. 4 seed from District 7-5A held the District 8-5A champ scoreless through the first 100 minutes of the game, and then won in penalty kicks to upset Summit in a Class 5A Region 1 bi-district game at RL Anderson Stadium in Mansfield.

Snapping a four-year playoff drought, the Bulldogs won their first bi-district game since 2014. They will face Birdville in the area round.

GIRLS

Haslet Eaton 6, North Crowley 0

Once the second half started and the wind was in Eaton’s favor, it was all Eagles as they scored five times after the break to beat North Crowley in a Class 6A Region 1 bi-district girls game Friday at Brewer HS.

Eaton (7-7-8) wins its second playoff game ever and gets a second-round date with El Paso Franklin, which advanced by Midland Lee.

“It was a slow start against the wind in the first half, but having that wind in the second really helped us break things open. We started to click and settle down,” Eaton coach Aaron Chevalier said. “The girls did a great job showing up. Abi was fantastic. Just a solid game and great team win across the board.”

The only goal in the first half came in the 26th minute when Eaton was fouled inside the box. Alexis Miller lined up for the penalty kick and booted it to the bottom right of the net.

North Crowley, in the playoffs for the first time since 2012 and looking for its first playoff win since 2004, made a couple nice stops to keep it a one-score game until Eaton started its onslaught 10 minutes into the second half.

“Defense has been solid all year and it’s been the biggest difference for us,” Chevalier said. “They bring it every night and kept it pretty tight back there.”

The Eagles scored three times in a six-minute span, two from senior captain defender Abi McGuire. Her first goal came in the 50th minute on a beautiful pass from Madison Blue. Her second came after a corner attempt was booted high into the air. The ball nearly went into the net, was stopped and McGuire was the beneficiary of the rebound in the 56th minute that made it 4-0.

“I’ve scored goals before, but a little surprised at two,” McGuire laughed. “Madison played a perfect ball across on my first goal.”

Eaton went up 3-0 in the 52nd minute on a score by Kassandra Ruelas.

Presleigh Huber made a PK with 13 minutes left and Izzy Moralez put the finishing touches in Eaton’s eighth shutout of the season. Blue finished with two assists and Miller added one. Amia Harris made two saves while posting the clean sheet.

“Our goal is to post a shutout every game. I think it’s possible for us every night. This has been our strongest defense in my four years,” McGuire said. “We’re a small team, but we work hard.

“Being a senior on varsity all four years, it’s amazing to see how much this team bonds together. When we started 6A, we were second to last. So to finish second in district this year and make it past the first round, it’s awesome.”

Colleyville Heritage 4, Wichita Falls 0

Colleyville Heritage dominated from the start to down Wichita Falls in a girls Class 5A bi-district game Friday at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine.

In the 9th minute, Alex Whitcraft punched the ball to Karalie Morrison who returned it to Whitcraft. Allie Love was racing down the left side and took a pass from Whitcraft, then drilled a left-footer from 10 yards out for a 1-0 lead.

Love took another shot, just like the first goal, from 15 yards out, but the ball was wide of the net and Anna Sugg chipped it in for a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute.

CHHS out shot the Coyotes 26 to 5. Wichita Falls’ first shot came with four minutes left in the first half.

Whitcraft headed in a goal on a cross from Maleina Newsome in the 56th minute and Morrison scored on a pass from Avery Thompson in the 67th minute to cap the scoring.

Colleyville Heritage (18-5-3) will face Burleson (15-7-2) in the area round at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington Lamar HS. Wichita Falls finishes at 9-6-1.
