Mansfield Legacy boys and girls complete sweep over Everman in district soccer action
After trailing early Wednesday night, Mansfield Legacy got a wake up call and scored five unanswered goals to beat Everman, 5-1, in a boys soccer game at Legacy HS.
Legacy improved to 6-2-2 in District 8-5A. Everman dropped to 4-6.
“The guys came out and worked real hard. They got up and motivated themselves,” Legacy coach Michael Keel said. “Everman is always strong and can be dangerous. We came out in the second half and took over.”
The Broncos controlled much of the offense through the first 20 minutes of the first half, but Everman’s defense was able to prevail and keep the contest scoreless.
Everman seized the opportunity when captain Yahir Romero booted a 20-yard strike off his left foot to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge in the 22nd minute.
Legacy tied it three minutes later when Joshua Omorodion was taken down inside the box and Seldin Korkutovic drilled the penalty kick. The teams were knotted at 1-1 during intermission.
Five minutes into the second half, Korkutovic scored on another penalty kick when Andrew Donohoe was fouled in the box. The Broncos led 2-1 with 35 minutes to play.
“Last year, Andrew was nicknamed the effort king and now everybody is taking on that role this year,” Keel said. “You saw tonight that we gave up our bodies several times. We know every opportunity the other team gets, we have to deny. Andrew and Josh are banged up, but still got those PKs.”
Jacob Stillings hit a cross to Adrian Lugo, who picked up his first goal of the season to extend the Legacy lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute. Lugo returned the favor when his assist found the top of Stillings’ head and into the back of the net for a 4-1 lead in the 67th minute.
“It was definitely an eye opener,” said Stillings of Everman’s goal. “I did a scissor cross over and turned and saw Adrian. He was in the right place at the right time. I passed it and he tapped it in. On my goal, I wasn’t sure what type of ball was going to be played, but it was perfectly placed to my head and I let it go.”
With an open net, Christopher Chinchilla booted a 35-yard goal for his first of the season and 5-1 margin.
The game was a makeup after it was postponed when the winter storm hit two weeks ago. It’s Legacy’s second of three games this week. The Broncos (12-4-4 overall) tied district-leading Mansfield Summit on Tuesday and will host Arlington Seguin on Friday. Legacy has 14 points in the district standings, two back of second-place Burleson and five back of Summit.
“It’s tough with the snowpocalypse and now we’re making up three games a week for three straight weeks, and we’re in a tough district,” Keel said.
Added Stillings, “It’s toll on your body for sure, but it comes down to mind over matter and we have to get the job done at the end of the day.”
