Southwest Preparatory Conference cancels spring seasons amid coronavirus pandemic
With the hopes of returning to play during the second week of April, the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) announced on Friday the cancellation of all spring seasons due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Sports affected include softball, baseball, track, golf, tennis and lacrosse.
“After exhausting all possible avenues to potentially postpone and reschedule a modified spring conference tournament, the Board of Directors of the Southwest Preparatory Conference unanimously decided to cancel all SPC athletic competitions for the entire spring season,” the SPC said.
The SPC made its original announcement on March 25 with the intention of canceling all conference games through April 13.
The SPC had considered a number of make-up options, which could’ve included a mini tournament for seeding for both its north and south zone schools.
Local schools include Fort Worth Trinity Valley, Fort Worth Country Day, Dallas St. Mark’s, Arlington Oakridge, Irving Cistercian, Dallas Hockaday, Addison Greenhill and Epsicopal School of Dallas.
“We are all saddened that circumstances warrant these actions but realize we are doing what is in the best interest of the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” SPC Comissioner Bob Windham and Board Chair Jon Kellam said in a press release.
“Throughout the remainder of this academic year and the summer months ahead, the Commissioner and Operations Committee will monitor ongoing conditions as we plan for the fall season. We will stay in close communication with all member schools as information warrants.”
The UIL announced during a video teleconference Sunday that it intends to complete all state championships left on the schedule, if the opportunity presents itself.
TAPPS also announced that if allowed, practices will return on May 4 just as the UIL.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has closed schools through April 30 and reopen on May 4.
