CLASS 3A SEMIFINALS

Shallowater 61, Schulenburg 26

Schulenburg, which lies in between San Antonio and Houston, was enjoying its best girls basketball season in 17 years when the Shorthorns last appeared at the state tournament.

And the Horns came into Thursday’s contest on a 25-game winning streak.

Unfortunately, their first trip to state since 2003 was short lived.

No. 8 Shallowater finished off the first quarter with an 8-2 run then held the Shorthorns to four points on 1 of 9 shooting in the second as the Fillies dominated their 3A semifinal game, 61-26, at the Alamodome.

The Fillies (38-2) will have a chance to win their second state championship and first since 2004 when they return to the Alamodome at 10 a.m. Saturday against the Woodsville-Winnsboro winner.

“We’re excited. You should be. You’re playing for a state championship,” Shallowater coach Chuck Darden said. “If you’re not excited, something’s wrong.”

Sophomore Bree Brattain was on fire early. Her 3-pointer with 2:41 in the first quarter gave her nine of Shallowater’s 16 points as the Fillies led 16-7. Brattain hit another three to end the period with 14 points and a 21-9 lead.

Shallowater extended the run to 27-6 to grab a 40-13 lead at intermission.

Brattain finished with a game-high 21 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Taylor Moravcik added 12 points and nine rebounds. The Fillies had more rebounds (47-31), steals (11-2) and forced 20 Schulenburg turnovers.

Schulenberg, which shot 9 of 40, was led by senior Brynlee Hollas’ 10 points and seven boards.

“We’re not the biggest out there, we haven’t been all year, but they were tremendous against a really good offensive team. Credit to our kids. They played smart D and didn’t get into foul trouble,” Darden said. “Every game we talk about starting with defensive rebounding. If we don’t do that then nothing else is going to happen.”
