Timberview rallies in OT, Centennial knocks off Seguin, Bowie gets balanced attack

Mansfield Timberview 41, Mansfield Legacy 40 OT

Timberview overcame a tough defensive effort from Legacy to down the Broncos in a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School.

The Wolves, who won last year’s state title and two in the past three years, will return to the 5A Region I tournament and face No. 17 Wichita Falls Rider (32-4) in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on Friday at Western Texas College in Snyder.

”It was a cross-town, knock-down, drag-out battle,” said Timberview coach Duane Gregory of the District 5-5A foes. “The atmosphere was great with this packed gym being so loud.”

No. 16 Timberview (27-8) trailed much of the game battling back from a 20-10 deficit that Legacy (27-10) had built early in the second quarter. The Wolves took a 37-35 lead with 3:25 left in regulation on a steal and lay-in by Eyan Gooden.

Justin Crawford, who led all scorers with 17, tied the game with a pair of free throws for Legacy at the 2:15 mark.

In overtime, Joey Madimba raced in for a layup off the opening tip to put the Wolves up 39-37, but Timberview couldn’t put the game away missing 7 of 9 free throws the rest of the way.

Legacy pulled to within 41-40 on a 3-pointer by Wayne Wiggins with 10 seconds left, but couldn’t pull off the upset.

Ahmad Richardson led Timberview with 12 points with Madimba, Gooden and Jared Washington chipping in 7 each.

”There’s really a truth, and it’s not just a cliche, that it’s hard to beat a really good team three times in the same year,” added Gregory. “But somehow we got it done.”

Burleson Centennial 75, Arlington Seguin 67

Zach Bolf scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Spartans held off the Cougars on Tuesday at Mansfield High School in another Class 5A Region I quarterfinal involving District 5-5A teams.

No. 15 Burleson Centennial (31-6) will meet El Paso Eastwood (29-7) in a 5A Region I semifinal at 6 p.m. on Friday at Western Texas College in Snyder. The regional final is 2 pm Saturday.

Centennial clinches its first trip to the regional tourney for the first time in program history.

District 5-5A champion Centennial, which had defeated Seguin (19-13) twice already in district play, opened an early 8-point lead after one quarter and pulled out to a 10-point lead at the half.

Tayton Conerway added 23 points for the Spartans and Keryn Collins chipped in 16.

Four Seguin players scored in double figures. Mason Adeleye led the way with 16 points for the Cougars. Brandon Monroe and C.J. Booker both hit three 3-pointers on their way to 15 points each. George Lino pitched in 10.

Arlington Bowie 65, Wolfforth Frenship 55

A trio of Volunteers scored 14 points as Bowie won a 6A Region I quarterfinal game on Tuesday at McMurry University in Abilene.

The Volunteers (25-10), which finished No. 4 in 4-6A, advance to the regional tourney for the first time since 2017. They will face No. 1 Duncanville, which beat Grand Prairie 66-65 in OT, at 6 pm Friday at Wilkerson Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.

The regional final is 1 pm Saturday.

Bowie led 29-22 at halftime, and then extended the lead after outscoring Frenship 23-13 in the third quarter.
