Softball Recap: Grapevine takes down Little Elm; Mansfield schools win big to advance
GRAPEVINE 7, LITTLE ELM 4
The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and Brooke Bingham struck 11 batters to send Grapevine past the Lobos in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A Region I bi-district softball series at Irving Nimitz.
Grapevine (17-13) will look to sweep Little Elm (23-6) in Game 2, 7 p.m. Friday at Nimitz.
Madison Motley’s liner to center drove in two runs and Rylin Baker smacked a two-run home run to left field. The Lobos scored two in the second and one in the third to get within 4-3, but Grapevine scored on a walk and error to go up 6-3.
Hannah Kelley added an RBI single in the fifth.
Georgia Heathcock homered and drove in two for Little Elm while Lauren Lucas struck out eight batters.
EATON 18, HEBRON 3
Five Eagles homered as Eaton defeated the Hawks in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 6A Region I bi-district series at Hebron.
Eaton (26-2) will look for the sweep when it hosts Hebron (15-19) at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Eagles jumped on the Hawks early with five runs in the first inning and two in the second, highlighted by a two-run home run and an RBI single from UNT commit Jaden Middlebrook.
They added one in the fourth on a home run from ACU signee Maddy Wright before bringing up 13 batters and scoring 10 times in the top of the fifth.
Kenzlee Zaher and Ashlyn Walker added RBI singles, and Chelsea Blankenship ripped a three-run homer to center. Two batters later and Vivica Hernandez added a two-run home run.
CARROLL 13, FLOWER MOUND 12
The Dragons erased an early 5-0 deficit with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning then held off a seventh-inning rally to beat the Jaguars in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 6A Region I bi-district series at Carroll.
Flower Mound (20-10-1) will host Carroll (21-12), 6 p.m. on Friday. Game 3 will follow if necessary.
The Jags got an RBI single from Bailey Brenek and two-run double from Delani Daughenbaugh to lead 5-0 in half an inning, but the Dragons brought up 15 batters. SFA commit Gaby Garcia hit a two-run home run and two-run single in the frame. She finished 3 for 3 with two homers and five RBI.
Daughenbaugh and Kayla Wallace drove in runs in the third to pull Flower Mound within 9-7, but Brooke Martin and CJ Hammer made it 12-7 Carroll, with three runs driven in.
Garcia’s lead off solo homer in the fifth gave Carroll a 13-7 lead.
Wallace added a two-run triple and McKenna Andrews came in with a pinch-hit two-run double as the Jags scored five times in the top of the seventh before Carroll pitcher Lauren Long struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded.
LAKE RIDGE, LEGACY, BOSWELL EARN SHUTOUTS
The Eagles, Broncos and Pioneers combined for 52 runs in victories over Dallas Molina, Carter-Riverside and Denton Ryan.
Lake Ridge (20-6-2) and Legacy (20-5-1) won one gamers to advance to the area round.
Boswell (29-5) and Ryan (13-20) will meet in Game 2, 5 p.m. Friday at Ryan. Game 3 will follow if necessary.
Minnesota commit Mackenzie Denson hit an inside the park home run and Kaly Gonzales doubled twice and drove in five for Lake Ridge. Alabama-Birmingham signee Jaycee Cook threw a no-hitter and struck out 14 of 15 batters faced for Legacy.
Boswell scored 11 times on 14 batters in the first inning. Julie Kennedy allowed two hits and struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings while driving in five at the plate. Emma Robertson and Gracelyn Rosales drove in three, and Angelique Scivicque and Byrdie Skipper added two apiece.
MANSFIELD, BURLESON WIN BIG
The Tigers and Elks combined to beat Pearce and South Hills, 47-5.
Mansfield (24-7) got seven home runs, two from UT-Arlington signee Reagan Hukill to push her season total to 15. The Tigers won a one-gamer to advance to area. Kennedy Hardy and Zoey Johnson also hit two home runs each, and Haley Morse also homered.
Burleson (20-7) and South Hills (15-12-1) will meet in Game 2, 7 p.m. Friday at South Hills. Bridgette Montes, Natali Wheeler, Kyleigh Rich and Isabella Inocencio combined for 11 hits and nine RBI. Logan Loggins hit a three-run home run.
