Arlington, Burleson girls; Castleberry, Trinity, Heights boys end quarterfinal droughts
GIRLS
Mansfield 1, Byron Nelson 0
A goal in the 45th minute was all the Tigers needed to eliminate the Bobcats in a 6A Region I area round soccer game at Pennington Field on Tuesday.
With the ball inside 18 yards, McKenly Watson threw an inbound pass that landed a few feet from the goal. One bounce and Julie Shahi sent it into the back of the net.
Beth Agee earned the shutout to push Mansfield’s record to 21-2-2 and into the regional quarterfinals where the Tigers will play Pearce, which beat Guyer 3-2.
Arlington 2, Odessa 0
Bre’ana Robledo and Caroline Pool scored and Hannah Falks picked up the shutout to send the Colts past Odessa in a 6A Region I area round game at Shotwell Stadium.
The Colts (18-2-3) head to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2012.
Robledo scored in the 26th minute and Pool hit a penalty kick in the 36th minute.
Burleson 1, Colleyville Heritage 0
Gracie Spradley’s goal in the 45th minute was enough for the Elks to beat the Panthers in a 5A Region I area round game at Clark Stadium and into the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2012.
Carroll 5, South Grand Prairie 1 (Monday)
Madi Drenowatz scored twice including one with 2 seconds left in the first half and Carroll (23-1-2) knocked out the Warriors in a 6A Region I area round game at Birdville Fine Arts Athletic Complex.
Drenowatz scored in the 19th minute on a beautiful cross from Bailey Meyer. Her second goal beat the first-half buzzer when she rebounded a Taylor Tufts’ attempt that bounced off the top post.
Texas signee Sydney Nobles drew a foul in the box in the 44th minute and Kendall Gilpin hammered home the penalty kick. Tufts put in her 26th goal of the season in the 49th minute and Nobles headed a Hanna Khan pass in the 56th minute.
SGP, which was past the first round for the first time since 2005, scored in the 64th minute.
Castleberry 3, Brownwood 2 (Monday)
Castleberry scored three times in the second half to eliminate Brownwood in a 4A Region I area round game at Graham. Castleberry reaches the regional quarterfinals for the second straight season.
Michelle Gutierrez, Alysia Espinoza and Leslie Guereca scored goals, and Caitlin Buendia registered two assists for Castleberry (20-3).
Brownwood scored in the 39th minute while Castleberry scored 34 seconds into the second half. Castleberry took the lead in the 56th minute and scored again in the 68th minute.
BOYS
Trinity 2, Odessa 1
Mina Youssef scored the game-winner with just under nine minutes remaining to send the Trojans past Odessa in a 6A Region I area round game at McMurry University.
Trinity (15-5-2) advances to the regional quarterfinals where it takes on Arlington Bowie, which beat Midland Lee 7-0. According to coach Tracy Duren, it’s the first time Trinity has made it past the second round.
Chen Adjei gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, but Odessa tied it up with a goal from Alan Rubio in the 63rd minute.
Sam Houston 3, Midland 1
Jose Ortiz, the Star-Telegram player of the year the past two seasons, scored twice and assisted on another as the Texans beat Midland in a 6A Region I area round game at McMurry University.
Midland scored on a corner kick two minutes in, but on the ensuing possession, Ortiz drove down the field and tied it up. The Texans (20-5) scored four minutes later to take the lead for good. Luis Ojeda added Sam Houston’s third goal.
The Texans will face Frenship, which knocked off Arlington 4-2.
Arlington Heights 3, Grapevine 1
Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Heights scored three times in the second half to beat the Mustangs in a 5A Region I area round game at Scarborough-Handley Field.
The Yellow Jackets advance to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2007.
Castleberry 2, Graham 0 (Monday)
Gerardo Lopez scored twice and Donovan Delgado picked up the shutout to send the Lions past the Steers in a 4A Region I area round game at Springtown. The Lions (16-8-1) advance to the regional quarterfinals for the first time.
