Byron Nelson star middle blocker Kelli McKinnon is the latest Dallas-Fort Worth volleyball player of the week. The senior, committed to Harding, helped the Class 6A No. 1 team to big road victories over Southlake Carroll and Keller.
“They were both really fun to be apart of,” she said. “I’m honored to be player of the week. I am so amazed by all the support that I’ve received from my team and the community here at Byron Nelson that has got me to this point and I hope that by getting this award that even more people can get involved and start supporting our team.”
In one of the best games of the season, No. 1 Nelson defeated No. 5 Carroll on September 18 in five sets after dropping the first two games. McKinnon finished with 11 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace.
The Bobcats then improved to 31-1 and 5-0 in 5-6A after beating No. 14 Keller in four sets after dropping the first game on Friday. McKinnon recorded 13 kills, a team-high 5 blocks and 1 ace. She had a game-high 0.706 hitting percentage, tied for her second best mark of the year.
Nelson swept Timber Creek on Tuesday and host Fossil Ridge on Friday.
“The Southlake game you could really tell the pressure was on to see who would bring it the most and luckily we were able to dig deep and pull through,” McKinnon said. “The Keller game was awesome. Everyone was so loud and energetic and Keller really played well the first set and throughout the whole game. Those last two games were definitely a small incite into what’s to come.”
McKinney junior D’Erricka Frierson came in second place after leading the Lions to an upset win over Plano West on September 18. Frierson led with a game-high 17 kills. The Lions went on to sweep Plano East on Friday.
