Denton Guyer injured star got to wear her uniform one more time on senior night
Denton Guyer volleyball star Shea Slusser received some heartbreaking news last month when she found out she would have to miss the rest of her senior season with a wrist injury.
Just a week after the Wildcats opened the season, Slusser learned she’d be out for an extended period. She got the news hours before Guyer’s home-opening victory vs. Prosper.
Then she heard her season was over and Slusser thought she would never wear her uniform again. But on senior night Friday against Eaton, she had her chance.
Slusser was in full uniform and hit a ceremonial first serve to get the match started. Guyer would sweep Eaton.
“Once I got my hard cast on, I started to help out during practice with little things like bumping in free balls and weirdly enough serving with my left hand as a righty,” she said. “During one drill at practice I was serving and getting some aces and I had mentioned that maybe I could serve on senior night with my left hand just kind of joking around.”
Friday morning, Slusser received some good news.
“I was jumping up and down thrilled when Coach Heather Van Noy had broke the news I was going to serve at our game against Eaton. Everyone on the team was so happy for me,” she said.
Eaton didn’t return the serve and Slusser was subbed out before hugging Van Noy.
“I was really thankful for the opportunity to put on a wildcat jersey and take part one last time,” Slusser said. “I was a little nervous if I was going to make it over with my left hand, but lucky i did. Just really blessed to be around people that continuously support me through my injury.”
Slusser has been playing on Texas Advantage, one of the top club programs, for the past three years. Her dream to play in college. Guyer is 24-12 and 3-2 in District 5-6A. The Wildcats are ranked in the latest Dallas-Fort Worth area volleyball rankings.
Her younger sister, Brooke, is a sophomore setter on Guyer.
