Road to Arlington: Pair of undefeated matchups highlights Thursday’s state title games

Wednesday was a great start to UIL state championship week, but it’s far from over.

Three more games headline Thursday’s action, which includes two games that feature undefeated matchups.

Class 2A Division II, 11 a.m. Thursday

Muenster (Muenster, Texas)

Overall record: 15-0

Head coach: Brady Carney

Defeated: Petrolia, 42-6; Iraan, 60-0; Munday, 41-7; Albany, 28-12; Wellington, 31-28

State championships: 0- First state final appearance

The Hornets: Muenster athletics is going for its third state title of 2017, having won in basketball and baseball. The Hornets have outscored their opponents 790-101 which comes out to an average of 53-7 per game. The defense has held opponents to single digits in 11 games with five shutouts.

Players to Watch

Clay Stevens, Sr., RB, DB: 1,500 total yards, 24 TDs and 6 INTs in 2017.

Parker McGrew, Jr., QB: 2,600 total yards and 56 TDs in 2017.

Danny Lutttmer, Soph., WR, DB: 9 TD receptions and 3 INTs in 2017.

Tenaha (Tenaha, Texas)

Overall record: 15-0

Head coach: Craig Horn

Defeated: Colmesneil, 74-0; Gateway Charter, 51-0; Iola, 34-14; Timpson, 59-0; Burton, 60-22

State championships: 2- 2011, 1998

The Tigers: Tenaha has scored at least 40 points in 12 of the past 13 games while the defense has posted six shutouts. The Tigers have fared slightly better than Muenster by outscoring their opponents 795-99 this season.

C.J. Horn, Sr., QB: 2,795 passing yards, 38 TDs, 15 rushing TDs in 2017.

Onterio Thompson, Sr., RB: 2,462 yards rushing and 34 TDs in 2017.

Trai Gardner, Sr., WR: 1,204 yards receiving and 18 TDs in 2017.

Tee Giles, Sr., LB: 201 tackles, 7 for loss, 2 INTs in 2017.

Jaurmez Brock, Jr., DE: 123 tackles, 19 for loss, 6 sacks in 2017.

Class 3A Division I, 3 p.m. Thursday

Brock (Brock, Texas)

Record: 13-2

Head coach: Chad Worrell

Defeated: Clyde, 49-3; Shallowater, 31-13; Wall, 29-10; Comanche, 34-7; Kemp, 49-21

State championships: 1- 2015

The Eagles: In just its fifth season at the UIL varsity level, Brock is trying for a second state title in the past three years. The Eagles beat Cameron Yoe 43-33 at NRG Stadium two years ago. Brock lost its final game of the regular season in the District 4-3A championship, but have since outscored five playoff opponents 192-54.

Skyler Collier, Sr., DL: Second team All-State in 2016.

Tripp Jones, Jr., QB: 2 passing TDs vs. Kemp.

Rockdale (Rockdale, Texas)

Record: 12-3

Head coach: Jeff Miller

Defeated: Malakoff, 46-33; Woodville, 55-30; West, 31-21; Teague, 42-20; Yoakum, 31-21

State championships: 1- 1976

The Tigers: Rockdale ends a 41-year drought by reaching a state football title game since winning it all in 1976. The Tigers started the season with a 1-2 record. Rockdale comes in averaging 41 points per game.

Torry Locklin, Sr., QB: 4,500 total yards and 53 TDs in 2017.

Jaquayln Crawford, Sr., RB, WR: 21 total TDs in 2017, District MVP in 2016.

Dylan David, Sr., LB: All-District Defensive MVP in 2016.

Class 3A Division II, 7 p.m. Thursday

Gunter (Gunter, Texas)

Record: 15-0

Head coach: Jake Fieszel

Defeated: Henrietta, 45-13; Daingerfield, 38-3; Holliday, 48-7; New Diana, 62-13; Canadian, 56-27

State championships: 1- 2016

The Tigers: After making its first state title game last year, Gunter is now attempting to win back-to-back football championships. During the regular season, the Tigers posted six shutouts and allowing 12 points per game in the playoffs. Gunter is riding a 31-game winning streak.

Daylan Bower, Sr., QB: District Offensive Newcomer of the Year in 2016.

Dylan Jantz, Jr., RB: 24 rushing TDs in 2017.

Braiden Sloan, Soph., LB: District Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2016.

Newton (Newton, Texas)

Record: 14-0

Head coach: WT Johnston

Defeated: Arp, 58-0; Rice, 65-11; West Rusk, 21-7; Waskom, 45-6; Boling, 55-28

State championships: 3- 2005, 1998, 1974

The Eagles: Newton has posted five shutouts and has allowed five playoff opponents to 10.5 points per game. The Eagles have a dominant run game with over 4,300 yards on the season. Newton is in its sixth state final, first since 2014.

Corbin Foster, Sr., LB: 217 tackles, 7 for loss, 4 sacks in 2017.

Darwin Barlow, Jr., RB: 2,100 yards rushing and 37 TDs in 2017.

Tamauzia Brown, Jr., WR: 13 TD receptions, 11 INTs in 2017.

Josh Foster, Jr., QB: 2,200 total yards and 41 TDs in 2017.
