UT Arlington women bounce back at South Alabama

The UT Arlington women dominated at both ends of the court Saturday and earned an impressive 63-46 victory at South Alabama.

It was the third win in the last four games for the Mavericks (13-10, 7-7 Sun Belt), who also swept the season series over the Jaguars (4-20, 1-14).

Cierra Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds for UTA, and Rebekah Van Dijk also had 12 points and added six rebounds. The Mavericks had seven players score at least six points.

The victory was a nice rebound from Thursday’s 65-58 overtime loss at Texas State. The Mavericks blew a nine-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation.

“The girls really responded from Thursday night,” UTA coach Krista Gerlich said. “I think they were really upset with themselves and how they didn’t finish that game.

“I just thought they came out and executed what we asked them to do.”

The Mavericks had 10 steals — including three from junior Amara Wainwright — and forced 18 turnovers. The Jaguars shot just 34.1 percent for the game.

UTA returns to College Park Center on Thursday for a Sun Belt matchup against Appalachian State.
