NCAA seeding set: TCU women’s basketball learns opponent in opening round of tournament
The TCU women’s basketball team earned a No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The Horned Frogs landed in the Birmingham Regional and will host No. 15 seed Fairleigh Dickinson at Schollmaier Arena on Friday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m CT (ESPN2). The winner will host either No 7 Louisville or No. 10 Nebraska on Sunday, March 23.
“It’s surreal, this whole journey is surreal,” head coach Mark Campbell said. “You kind of feel like you’re living in a movie as this thing keeps unfolding. We truly set these two goals in June; have a chance to compete for a league title and try to put yourself in position to host and be a top-16 seed. This team did both of those.”
TCU learned its seeding in front of a nice crowd at Schollmaier Arena. Head coach Mark Campbell said he was blown away by the turn out.
“It was unbelievable,” Campbell said. “I got a chance to stand up there and turn around and see the crowd, I was speechless. It’s just so neat, the fanbase that has come out this year, especially today. A two seed, you follow ESPN’s bracketology and Charlie Creme, he’d been having us as a two seed for while so we knew there was a chance that could come to fruition and it did.”
If the Horned Frogs win both games, they will advance to Birmingham for the Sweet 16 and potential Elite Eight rounds. A possible Sweet Sixteen opponent could be No. 3 seed Notre Dame, who the Horned Frogs defeated 76-68 on Nov. 29.
It’s TCU’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2009-10 and the Horned Frogs will look to advance to the second round for the first time since 2006.
The 31-3 Horned Frogs are enjoying the best season in the program’s history after winning their first Big 12 regular-season and tournament championships.
“There’s a lot of pride with where this program has come in the last two years,” forward Sedona Prince said. “I don’t think any of us would’ve thought today would’ve been what it was, seeing us as a No. 2 seed with all these fans in the stands.
It’s really beautiful and one of those moments you just sit back and reflect all the things we’ve been through and all the adversity we’ve had to overcome as a team.”
UCLA is the No. 1 overall seed. Other No. 1 seeds are South Carolina, Texas and USC. The Longhorns are the top seed in TCU’s regional.
N.C. State, Duke and UConn are the other No. 2 seeds.
