South Alabama stuns UTA men on late 3-pointer in overtime

Shaq Calhoun drilled a 3-pointer late in overtime, and South Alabama upset UT Arlington 88-85 on Saturday afternoon, ending UTA’s eight-game winning streak.

UTA’s Erick Neal hit a jumper to tie the score at 85 with 40 seconds left in overtime. Calhoun responded with his 3, and the Mavericks missed three 3-pointers in the final seven seconds.

Calhoun finished with 12 points, Georgi Boyanov had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Ken Williams added 23 points for the Jaguars (7-10, 2-4 Sun Belt).

Kevin Hervey had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Mavericks (13-3, 4-1). Neal finished with 17 points, Kaelon Wilson scored 13 points and Jalen Jones added 10.

South Alabama led 43-34 at intermission. UTA clawed back with a 16-2 run and led 78-69 with 3:22 to go.

Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:41 remaining to get South Alabama within three, and Boyanov’s free throws with 21 seconds to go forced overtime.
