Offense: The Horned Frogs added numbers to the receiver corps for Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin, signing South Grand Prairie’s Jaelan Austin, Arlington Bowie’s Tony James, Arlington Sam Houston’s Darrion Flowers and Jarrison Stewart of Mesquite Horn. The Horned Frogs lost prized commitment J.F. Thomas at the last minute to Texas Tech.
Defense: Euless Trinity pass rusher Tipa Galeai joins a defensive line that got contributions from several players last season. The Frogs also added Fort Worth Southwest linebacker Semaj Thomas and a group of hard-hitting safeties like Arlington Bowie’s Niko Small and Fossil Ridge’s Montrel Wilson who might also be candidates for the type of fast, rangy linebackers TCU likes.
Immediate impact: It will be hard to crack the lineup at receiver, but there will be opportunities for any pass-catcher who can go up and compete for a ball, which is the kind of play Boykin got from his receivers last season. Linebacker is a wide-open spot, and if players like Mike Freeze of Weatherford and Semaj Thomas of Southwest are polished, they will get a chance.
