Does TCU need to win the Big 12 tournament championship to host a regional next week?

Maybe, maybe not.

“Not necessarily,” TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “But we need to play very deep into this tournament.”

TCU takes the No. 17 RPI into Wednesday’s 4 p.m. opener against Baylor at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, so the Horned Frogs are near the dividing line of one criteria the NCAA selection committee can consider in awarding the 16 regional host sites.

TCU has hosted a regional five of the past seven seasons. It has proven valuable for the Horned Frogs — they are 14-3 in home regionals, advancing to Super Regional series four times.

Every win this week will help the Horned Frogs’ resume after finishing third in the Big 12. A projection by D1baseball.com has only Texas Tech from the Big 12 hosting a regional.

“All of this stuff is relative to what goes on across the country this week,” Schlossnagle said.

The regional sites will be announced Sunday night by the NCAA. The rest of the 64-team field will be announced at 11 a.m. Monday on ESPNU.
