TCU men’s tennis beats Oklahoma for berth in Big 12 final
No. 5 TCU dropped the first six sets, but came back to beat No. 10 Oklahoma 4-2 and reach the finals of the Big 12 men’s tennis championships on Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.
In the final, the Horned Frogs will face Texas Tech, a 4-3 winner over Baylor.
Trevor Johnson and Guillermo Nuñez won the doubles point for the Frogs (23-3) with a 7-5 victory. Cameron Norrie and Alex Rybakov cruised to their 10th victory of the season with a 6-1 win.
Oklahoma came back to take the first set on all six singles courts. The Sooners went up 2-1 in the match with straight-set wins on two courts, but the Frogs forced the remaining four matches courts into third sets.
Rybakov rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Spencer Papa. Norrie avenged his loss earlier this season to Axel Alvarez Llamas with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win.
Johnson clinched the match when he won the tiebreaker in the third set to defeat Maxime Mora 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
In other TCU news:
Women’s tennis: No. 35 TCU fell to No. 19 Texas Tech in the semifinals of the Big 12 championships in Stillwater. Tech will play Oklahoma State for the title.
The only win for the Frogs (15-6) came from Olaya Garrido-Rivas, who scored her 22nd victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lynn Kiro.
Track & field: Paola Miranda placed fifth in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 191 feet, 3 inches at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Adam Damadzic was fourth in men’s discus with a 180-11.
Megan Smith took bronze in the women’s shot put with a mark of 52-8 3/4 .
Also taking a bronze was Sabrina Moore in the 100 meters with a 11.67.
UTA softball
UT Arlington (28-16, 7-13) lost a Sun Belt doubleheader to Troy, falling 5-4 in the opener and 12-2 in the second game. Troy scored two runs in the top of the ninth in the opener.
