No. 9 TCU shuts out Shockers on 3-hitter in Wichita
Dane Steinhagen homered to right center in the fifth inning to put the Frogs on the board, and Josh Watson hit a two-run triple in the sixth to lead No. 9 TCU to a 3-0 victory over the Wichita State Shockers on Friday night.
That was more than enough for the Frogs (20-5, 2-2 Big 12) with starter Luken Baker and Jared Janczak combining for a three-hit shutout in the first of a three-game nonconference series.
Baker gave up one hit, walked two and hit a batter in four innings. Janczak did the rest, giving up only two hits, walking two and striking out nine over the last five innings. Janczak (4-1) retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, including eight by strikeout.
Steinhagen and Cam Warner both went 2-for-4 for the Frogs, who have won three in a row since back-to-back losses to the Texas Longhorns last week in Austin.
Willie Schwanke (4-4) went the distance for the Shockers (9-17), giving up three runs on nine hits, one walk and striking out five.
Ryan Tinkham went 2-for-4 and accounted for the Shockers’ most serious threats, reaching second both times he got on base.
Tinkham singled to lead off the ninth and reached second on a wild pitch, but Janczak struck out the final two batters to end the game.
