TCU sophomore guard Malique Trent was named the newcomer of the week award in the Big 12 on Monday for his play in two games last week.

He scored 15 points off the bench at Texas Tech and a career-high 25 in a start against Baylor.

He shot 45.8 percent in the two games and was 14-of-16 at the foul line. He also had five rebounds and five steals.

Trent, his first year at TCU after transfering from New Mexico Junior College, has started 23 games for the Horned Frogs and is their second-leading scorer at 11.8 points per game.

He leads the Big 12 in steals per game with 1.92 and total steals, 50.

“When I slow down and play my game, I can be a great player,” he said after Saturday’s game against then-No. 19 Baylor. “When I’m playing defense and I’m getting steals and being active, that’s helping my team. But it’s also helping me as a person to see where I am in this game, in the Big 12, because it is the best league in the country.”

Trent is the second TCU player to win conference honors this season. Sophomore forward Vladimir Brodziansky was named the newcomer of the week on Nov. 16 after his work in the season’s first week.

TCU (11-18, 2-14) plays at Kansas State on Wednesday night and wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against Oklahoma.
