No. 10 West Virginia used 11 steals to go up by 19 at halftime and closed the game with a 15-2 run to trounce TCU 73-42 on Saturday.

TCU (11-14, 2-10 Big 12) fell behind 11-2 as West Virginia’s press forced five turnovers in less than five minutes. The Horned Frogs never got closer than six. The Mountaineers (20-5, 9-3) led 41-22 at halftime.

The Frogs, again without forward Karviar Shepherd (back injury), finished with 26 turnovers and had the ball stolen 15 times.

Sophomore guard Chauncey Collins scored 20 of the Frogs’ 42 points, matching his career high, set against WVU in a 95-87 loss on Jan. 4.

“Well, for the most part we had one guy that I thought showed up and competed a little bit,” TCU coach Trent Johnson said. “It had nothing to do with his 20 points, but I thought Chauncey did as good of job defensively as he’s done all year. I thought his overall competitiveness once they made runs was encouraging.”

TCU cut West Virginia’s lead to 58-40 with 5:38 to play on Malique Trent’s layup. TCU then went scoreless for almost five minutes.

The 31-point loss was the biggest margin of defeat for TCU this season, topping the 28-point setback (82-54) at Baylor on Jan. 13.

The Mountaineers are tied atop the Big 12 standings with Kansas.

Mountaineers forward Jonathan Holton returned from a suspension after missing four games to score 14 points and grab seven rebounds.

Esa Ahmad had a career-high 14 points and five rebounds for WVU, and Devin Williams, had his Big 12-leading 11th double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He became West Virginia’s 50th 1,000-point scorer.

Jaysean Paige had 10 points for West Virginia.

West Virginia is 8-0 all-time against TCU with all the games being played in the Big 12.

Holton entered the game with 16:29 remaining in the first half. He hit a 3-pointer and then took a perfect pass for a layup and a 22-10 lead.

His slam dunk later made it 33-15.

The 31-point margin was West Virginia’s largest in Big 12 play this season.
