TCU looking for shooting lift as Kansas comes to Schollmaier Arena
When TCU is shooting well, coach Trent Johnson notices something happens.
“It snowballs,” he said. “With this team, it’s been like that all year.”
It just hasn’t happened a lot this year.
The Horned Frogs rank 289th in the country with 41.5 percent shooting. They are 252nd in 3-point shooting percentage, 32.7.
If that can turn around, the Horned Frogs (10-12, 1-8 Big 12) have a chance to make a push in the Big 12 standings when the second half of the league schedule begins Saturday with a home game against seventh-ranked Kansas (18-4, 6-3).
“I don’t make a big deal of it,” Johnson said. “I evaluate from the standpoint of getting good shots and the things that we can control — maximum effort defensively, the ability to take care of the ball, not have unforced turnovers and staying within the system offensively and defensively.”
TCU’s best shooting mark in conference is 42.6 percent, both times at home in Schollmaier Arena, against West Virginia and Texas. That produced a split of those games.
In seven games at Schollmaier, the Frogs have averaged 41.9 percent shooting and are 4-3. Away from Schollmaier, it’s 38.4 percent with a 2-7 record. (The team shot 45.7 percent and went 4-2 in six games at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center).
There are going to be nights where the ball is not going to go in for them. But you can’t let that dictate your confidence in stepping up and shooting the ball.
TCU coach Trent Johnson
“There are going to be nights where the ball is not going to go in for them,” Johnson said. “But you can’t let that dictate your confidence in stepping up and shooting the ball. You can’t let that dictate how hard you play at the other end of the floor.”
Sophomore forward Vladimir Brodziansky leads TCU in shooting percentage, 54.5, ranking fifth among qualifying Big 12 players (4.0 shots made per game).
Sophomore guard Chauncey Collins is seventh in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage, 40.2.
“We’ve got nine, 10 guys that are going to play,” Johnson said. “Everybody needs to be ready to play. We all know it. We don’t have anybody out there you can count on to give us 25 or 20 points every game.”
