TCU women go cold, falter at Texas Tech

Kelsi Baker scored 17 points, helping Texas Tech to a 52-37 victory over TCU in Big 12 women’s basketball on Sunday.

The victory snapped a 20-game conference losing streak by the Red Raiders.

It was the Big 12 opener for both teams.

TCU struggled on offense, falling behind 21-13 in the first half. The Frogs were equally cold both halves, hitting 26.1 percent of their shots in the first half and 27.6 in the second.

Zahna Medley, who came into the game averaging 17.1 points per game, was 1-of-11 from the field and finished with three points.

Veja Hamilton reached double figures for the third time in four games to lead TCU with 10 points. Chelsea Prince just missed a double-double with 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Caitlin Diaz added seven rebounds in 14 minutes.

TCU (8-4, 0-1) also had 20 turnovers and was outscored 32-16 inside.

With Doya Olabode leading the way with six points, Texas Tech (12-2, 1-0) raced to a 13-2 lead and never looked back.

The last time the Red Raiders won a conference game was when they beat Oklahoma State 61-53 on Feb. 27, 2013.

“This is probably one of the best Big 12 wins I have had in my career and I have been here a long time,” Baker, a fifth-year senior, told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The loss ended TCU’s four-game winning steak.
