Sea World, Spurs, veterans highlight Alamo Bowl activities for TCU, Oregon
TCU was scheduled to begin its bowl week of activities with a visit Tuesday morning to the Center for the Intrepid, a rehab facility for soldiers hurt in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Linebacker Sammy Douglas, receiver Deante’ Gray, center Joey Hunt, safety Kenny Iloka, defensive end James McFarland and cornerback Ranthony Texada were tapped to represent the Horned Frogs.
Oregon was scheduled to visit the facility in the afternoon. Both visits are closed to reporters.
TCU practice was scheduled to practice at 11:30 Tuesday at Incarnate Word, beginning three days of practices. Oregon, which arrived in San Antonio two days before TCU, has been practicing at Alamo Heights High School.
Linebacker Travin Howard and running back Kyle Hicks are scheduled to talk to reporters after practice. Then, TCU is scheduled to spend the afternoon at Sea World.
Wednesday, Oregon visits Sea World, but publicity activities are planned for players from both teams that day. Three players from each team will participate in an interaction with sea lions, and a second set will ride the Steel Eel roller coaster with a camera mounted on the front car, bowl officials said.
Wednesday is also the start of the formal press conferences. TCU co-defensive coordinators Chad Glasgow and DeMontie Cross and players Josh Carraway, Denzel Johnson, Derrick Kindred and Ty Summers meet with reporters at 4 p.m. at the Marriott Riverwalk, while Oregon conducts an offensive press conference an hour later.
Wednesday night, the Horned Frogs will attend the Spurs vs. Suns game at AT&T Center. Oregon attended the Monday night Spurs game.
Thursday at 3:30 p.m., TCU holds its offense press conference with co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie and players Trevone Boykin, Aaron Green, Kolby Listenbee and Halapoulivaati Vaitai at the Marriott Riverwalk following Oregon’s defense press conference an hour earlier.
At 5 p.m. Thursday, both teams participate in a pep rally at Arneson River Theatre on the Riverwalk. The bands and cheerleaders from both schools are scheduled to perform, and the head coaches and captains from both teams will speak. The rest of the players will watch from river cruisers.
After the pep rally, both teams are guests of the Alamo Bowl at a private dinner in the Villita Assembly Building, which will include player talent and trivia contests.
San Antonio’s downtown New Year’s Eve celebration begins at 6 p.m., expected to draw 200,000 for fireworks at the Tower of the Americas.
No activities are scheduled Friday, except for the head coaches press conference at 11 a.m. and the kickoff luncheon at the Marriott Rivercenter, where the head coaches and captains are scheduled to speak.
The Alamo Bowl kickoff on Saturday is set for 5:50 p.m., but may be delayed until 5:55 depending on the progress of the Liberty Bowl at the end of the third quarter, Alamo Bowl officials said.
