5 TCU players named first-team all-Big 12

Five TCU players were first-team selections on the All-Big 12 Conference football team, announced Wednesday by the league office.

Senior wide receiver Josh Doctson was joined by senior center Joey Hunt on the offense. Horned Frogs on the first-team defense were senior lineman Davion Pierson, junior lineman Josh Carraway and senior safety Derrick Kindred.

The team was selected by the conference’s 10 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was named offensive player of the year while Baylor tackle Andrew Billings and Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah shared top defensive player honors. Bob Stoops of Oklahoma was named coach of the year.

Keller Central’s Zack Sanchez (defensive back) and Euless Trinity’s Nila Kasatati (offensive line) were Tarrant County high school products who earned first-time honors.

The other awards:

▪ Defensive newcomer of the year: Demond Tucker, Iowa State, DL, Jr.

▪ Offensive freshman of the year: Mike Warren, Iowa State, RB

▪ Defensive freshman of the year: Malik Jefferson, Texas, LB

▪ Special teams player of the year: Morgan Burns, K-State, KR/PR, Sr.

▪ Offensive lineman of the year: Spencer Drango, Baylor, Sr.

▪ Defensive lineman of the year: Andrew Billings, Baylor, Jr.
