Jada Butts scored a game-high 18 points and TCU beat visiting Sam Houston 85-59 in the women’s basketball season opener Friday night at the University Recreation Center.

TCU opened the game by scoring 11 straight points. Butts, Zahna Medley and AJ Alix hit 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the game to help the Frogs build a double-digit lead.

The Frogs used three runs of at least 9-0 or better in the opening half. TCU limited the Bearkats to just 16.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half.

“This was a great chance for us to get in the win column,” coach Raegan Pebley. “I was proud of the effort our team played with and the sustained effort [we had]. We made mistakes, but I felt like our effort made up for those mistakes throughout the game.”

Butts had one of her best outings of her career to open the season, posting 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and getting five steals in just 21 minutes.

It was also a historic night for Medley as she entered the top five in the TCU record book for career points, the top four in career assists and moved into second in career three-point field goals. Medley finished with 12 points.

Alix added 11 points and Veja Hamilton had 12 points to round out the four Frogs in double figures.
