Texas Tech’s starting quarterback enters treatment for gambling addiction

Texas Tech starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby is entering a residential treatment program for gambling addiction, the university announced Monday.

Sorsby “will take an immediate indefinite leave of absence from the football program,” Texas Tech said in a statement. “... Texas Tech is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.”

ESPN cited sources who said Sorsby made “thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app, which jeopardizes his eligibility.”

Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech, the defending Big 12 champion, after starting the past two seasons at Cincinnati. He threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with five interceptions last season for the Bearcats, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors. The senior was among the most coveted quarterbacks in the transfer portal, reportedly drawing interest from Indiana, LSU and Miami.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

Texas Tech said it would have no further comment on Sorsby’s status and asked the media and the public to respect the privacy of Sorsby and his family.

Texas Tech’s quarterback situation without Sorsby is unclear. Backup Will Hammond is coming off a right ACL tear suffered in October.

TCU is scheduled to face the Red Raiders in its regular-season finale on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, in Lubbock.
