TCU men’s basketball lands former Allen standout from transfer portal

TCU men’s basketball has landed another transfer portal commitment on Monday and the new addition fills a big need for next year’s roster.

West Virginia forward DJ Thomas committed to the Horned Frogs on social media and joins a transfer class that includes Big West Freshman of the Year Gavin Sykes from Long Beach State.

Thomas is a 6-foot-9 forward that was a standout at Allen. In his freshman season Thomas played in all 35 games, averaging 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while playing just over 16 minutes per game.

Thomas showed flashes of his potential throughout the season for the Mountaineers including scoring 20 points against Creighton, 13 points in a win against a ranked BYU team and leading West Virginia in scoring against Houston 16 point. Thomas hit four of his five 3-pointers against Houston.

Thomas scored five points and blocked two shots in his lone game against TCU this past season. The Horned Frogs won that matchup 60-54 on Feb. 21.

The addition of Thomas solidifies TCU’s frontcourt as Thomas could get the first opportunity to start at center alongside returning All-Big 12 forward Xavier Edmonds. The Horned Frogs are also bringing in 7-foot junior college center Ryan Hunt for depth.

With nine players in the fold, TCU will likely look to add just one more transfer addition at the wing spot to put the finishing touches on the 2026 roster.
