TCU head football coach provides update on contract extension talks

TCU and head football coach Sonny Dykes are in the final stages of agreeing to a contract extension.

Athletics director Mike Buddie said on Feb. 18 that the school was working on an extension, and Dykes provided an update on where things stood Tuesday.

“I think we’re there. I think we’re getting close,” Dykes said on the first day of spring camp. “I think we’re there, but the legal stuff is getting all sorted out.”

Dykes is 36-17 in four seasons at TCU with a national championship game appearance and a College Football Playoff victory over Michigan in 2022. Dykes received in extension in December 2022 that took his contract to 2028.

After a 5-7 season in 2023, Dykes has led TCU to back-to-back nine win seasons with the Horned Frogs finishing No. 25 in last year’s final Associated Press Top 25 after winning three straight games to close out the season.

Dykes said getting the deal done would make it easier to navigate the upcoming season.

“You don’t want to think about those things during the season,” Dykes said. “So as it came up in the season, we were kind of just like, let’s get through it and figure out what we want to do. We did, and where we’re at now, I’m anticipating it getting done quickly. I’m excited about it. I wake up every day excited to come to work.”

The Horned Frogs opened spring camp Tuesday and will open the season in Ireland against North Carolina on Aug. 29.
