No. 8 TCU women’s basketball pulls away to pass road test against 12-1 BYU

No. 8-ranked TCU women’s basketball picked up a second straight Big 12 win as the Horned Frogs dominated the fourth quarter to defeat BYU 72-48 on New Year’s Eve in Provo, Utah.

It was the first true road game for TCU (14-0, 2-0) since facing N.C. State on Nov. 16, and the Cougars (12-2, 1-1) provided a good test for the Horned Frogs, who have gotten accustomed to blowing out opponents this season.

A balanced approach was the key, as the Horned Frogs received a boost off the bench from senior guard Veronica Sheffey. With BYU trailing only 27-25 late in the second quarter, Sheffey went on a personal 6-0 run, knocking down a 3-pointer and three free throws to give TCU a 33-25 lead right before halftime.

The Horned Frogs would need that cushion as BYU continued to stay close throughout the third quarter. Midway through the period it was only a two-point game at 38-36.

But that was when TCU flipped the switch and broke the game open, starting with a 3-pointer from graduate transfer guard Olivia Miles. That sparked a 12-2 run, punctuated by a bucket from senior guard Taylor Bigby that increased TCU’s lead to 50-38 with 30 seconds remaining in the third.

Junior guard Donovyn Hunter and sophomore center Clara Silva helped put the game away in the fourth as Hunter knocked down two 3s and Silva scored four straight to increase TCU’s lead to 63-45. The Horned Frogs cruised in the final five minutes as they delivered BYU only its second loss of the year.

TCU outscored BYU 22-8 in the fourth quarter.

Miles had her fourth triple-double in five games with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

Silva led the team with 15 points, and Sheffey scored a season-high 10. Bigby and graduate transfer forward Marta Suarez also scored 12 points.

TCU held BYU to just 30% from the floor.

The 14-game winning streak to open the season matches the best single-season run in TCU men’s or women’s basketball history.

The Horned Frogs will stay in Utah and face the Utes (10-4, 1-1) at 8 p.m. Saturday in Salt Lake City.
